Boulonnais
A French breed of horse from the Boulonnais region. During the Crusades Arab and Barb stallions were brought from the East by French Crusaders to improve the breed. In pre-railway days they were very strong horses with a good action and stamina and used in coaches for fast transport. Today they are found as a heavy draught, 16-17hh, quick growing with plenty of bone and muscle and can be used for farm work at 18 months. Although the name is derived from Boulogne, they are also bred in Flanders, Picardy, Artois, and Normandy. Many hold that a dash of Boulonnais blood improves any heavy breed, as Arab or Thoroughbred does to most of the light breeds.
