Falling in
  In order to compensate for stiffness or loss of balance, a horse turning on a circle or around a corner, turns with his shoulder first and frequently the head is turned to the outside of the circle or turn.

Farm Harness
  A simple type of harness used in single draft in the 19th century and by the artillery from early days until c.1800.

Farrier
  Someone who is trained in the art of shoeing horses.

Feathers
  The long hairs around the pasterns of most heavy breeds and some ponies. They are the horse's drainpipes allowing the rain to run off the legs rather than collecting around the fetlock joint. Horses from hot or dry countries have little or no feathers.

Femur
  (thighbone) One of the heaviest and strongest bones in the body. It is between tow important joints, the hip and stifle, and is adapted form providing attachment for the large muscles in the horse's quarters.

  A free-roaming horse whose ancestors have escaped from captivity and returned to their wild state.

Fescues, Meadow /Tall
  (Festuca pratensis/arundinacea) though not abundant in pasture they are common in fertile meadows. They are sensitive to competition from rye grass but, will grow on light sandy soil and are drought sensitive. They provide both grazing and cutting varieties.

  A joint on all four legs at the junction of the cannon bone and pastern bones.

Fibula
  A small slender bone attached at the upper and lower ends to the tibia.

Fiddling
  Hands that continually change the contact with the horse's mouth.

Fifteen Bobber
  The slang name for the remount loaned by the Government to officers between the two world wars for 15s a month. The remount could be used for sport and was kept in good condition at no expense to the Government.

Fillet Strings
  Are a piece of coloured cord attached to the back corners of some rugs; they prevent the back of the rug from blowing around in windy conditions. Fillet strings are particularly useful on lightweight rugs used at shows or when travelling.

Filling
  Oedema of the legs or soft swellings on the body.
