Headpiece And Throat Lash
  Made from the same piece of leather. The headpiece combined with the check-pieces support the bit in the horse's mouth. The throat-lash helps to keep the bridle in place and prevent the bridle, being pushed/pulled over the horse's ears.

Hemlock
  (Conium Maculatum) contains several poisonous alkaloid chemicals. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Hemlock resembles many other harmless members of the parsley family; however, its smooth, purple-blotched stems and unpleasant smell can easily identify it. Hemlock is found by roads, streams and on waste ground throughout Britain. It is less common in the north.

High Mounting
  A late 18th century and early 19th century expression for a saddle of Hussar type with a high pommel and cantle.

High School or Haute Ecole
  The training of a horse to execute a series of difficult and controlled movements at all paces. This practice was much favoured at various times by officers of various armies for training chargers.

Hinney
  The offspring of a male horse and a female ass/donkey. Often mistakenly called a jennet. Hinneys are comfortable to ride and are useful light daft harness animals.

Hobday's Operation
  Is an operation to clear an obstruction in the larynx of a horse who's breathing (wind) is unsound, named after Sir Fredrick Hobday FRCVS. (1870 - 1939). The operation consists of removing the paralysed vocal cords, which inhibit breathing. The only side effect is that the horse can no longer whinny.

Hollow Back
  When the natural concave line of the back is exaggerated, often found in old horses.

Hoof
  Oil - for oiling hooves for special occasions, used daily it blocks the pores of the hoof and prevents the hoof from breathing.

Pick - for picking out the feet to remove the dirt and stones from the hoof. Used from the heel towards the toe to prevent the point of the hook pick accidentally digging into the frog or heels.

Hoof Markings and Numbering
  A common method of identifying army horses, but has the disadvantage of growing out with the natural renewal of the horn.

Hooves
  Are black, white, or striped, depending on the colour. Generally, dark legs have black hooves; white legs usually have white or striped hooves.

Horn
  The hard, insensitive, outer covering of the hoof.This may be tall or short, thick or thin, and have a large horn cap or a small one. The angle used in attaching a horn to a tree also varies. The intended use for the saddle usually determines the horn design.
