Point of Hock
  See Os Calsis.

Pointing
  A horse standing with one frontleg stuck out markedly in front of the other. This usually indicates discomfort in the foot. The same action with the hind leg is normal and is referred to as 'resting a hind'.

Points (of a horse)
  Names given to the different parts of a horse. Also used to describe the mane, tail and lower legs.

Poitou Ass
  An ass which sometimes attains 15hh, with as much as 9 inches of bone. It has enormously large ears, which cannot be carried upright but poke outwards and which have the hair inside forming a series of curls called ‘cadenettes’, this being a sign of pure breeding.
The usuall colours are dark brown and black, but greys are seen. Bred to cart mares, Poitou jacks throw very good heavy-type mules, some of which stand over 16hh.

Port
  A raised section in the centre of a mouthpiece of some curb bits, to allow room for the horse's tongue. It may be raised to a greater or lesser degree, therefore affecting the severity of the bit.

Posting
  Riding like a postboy or postillion, i.e. rising in the stirrups in rhythm with the time of the horse's trot. Used in America to describe rising trot.

  Also known as the Basque pony. Normally black standing 1m20 found in the Basque regions of Spain and France.

Prophet's Thumb Marks
  Are an indentation, the size of a thumb, which appears in the flesh, particularly on the neck. They are supposed to be the sign of a good horse.

  Horses of the middle Eocene era have four toes in the front foot and three toes in the hind foot this being a transitional stage between five to three toes.
