Sacrum
  A single bone formed from the five lumbar vertebrae fused together.

Safed Off Shoe
  Where a hind shoe is rounded on the outer edge and set back under the foot to minimise the risk of damage to a foreleg from over-reaching.

Sandcrack
  Cracks in the wall of the hoof from the ground surface upward, or starting at the coronary band and extending downwards. Caused by lack of care or an injury to the coronary band.

Sarcoid
  A tumour on the skin caused by a virus. It may appear on the legs, head, shoulder, breast, or flanks. Resembles a wart at first but grows rapidly and ulcerates. On removal, it tends to recur and may bleed.

  Inflammation or in severe cases, blistering of the back under the saddle caused by heat and sweat.

Scamperdale Pelham Bit
  An angle mouth with straight bar bit made popular by Sam Marsh, a well-known 20th century horseman. It is though that greater control is obtained because the cheeks meet a part of the horse's mouth not hitherto affected.

Scapula or Shoulder Blade
  A flattened triangular plate that attaches the foreleg to the trunk by means of muscles and ligaments. It partially covers the first six or seven ribs.

Seatworm
  A nematode, which lives in the caecum and colon. After further development the larvae grow into adults, completeing the cycle. They may irritate the anus, causing the horse to rub against an object.

Seedy Toe
  A separation of the sensitive and insensitive laminae of the foot. It generally follows chronic laminitis or infection. The horn becomes brittle and crumbles, leaving a gap between the wall of the hoof and the pedal bone.
