Soundness
  Iis a state of health or fitness to carryout a particular function, i.e. sound for racing, breeding.

Spavin
  A swelling within or around the hock joint.

Jack - a large bone spavin

Bog - a swollen hock joint due to increased synovial fluid.
Occult - typical hock lameness, without any visible sign. Diagnosis is by X-ray.

  By flexing the hock for a minute or two and then trotting smartly away.

Speedy Cutting
  Striking into the inner and lower side of the knee with the inside of the toe of the opposite foreleg.

Splint
  A condition of the bone (usually the front leg) on the inside of the cannon bone. Caused by:
A fractured shaft causing a callus
An inflamed binding ligament
Inflamed lining of the cannon bone.

Splint Bones (Small Metacarpal Bones)
  Are remnants of an earlier time when horses had five toes. The inner bone is usually slightly larger than the outer bone, each bone is rounded on the outside giving them a three-sided appearance.

Splinter Bar
  A cross-timber fixed to the front of a vehicle to which the wheelers of a team are attached by their traces.

Sprain
  An abnormal stretching of ligament, tendon, muscle, joint, capsule, tendon sheaths or membrane lining

Spring Tree
  A saddle- tree with a strip of metal let in at the waist to give more flexibility.

  Small metal devices (usually blunt) worm on the rider's boot to help reinforce the leg aids.

Stable
  Bandages - are made of wool or stockinet, 10cm (4") wide, they provide warmth and support. It is necessary to use gamgee or fibregee underneath to help prevent the leg becoming damaged.

Management - the art of looking after one or more stabled horses including all aspects of their welfare.

Rubber - is for removing dust and scurf from the surface of the horse's coat after grooming, for a final polish.

Staring Coat
  The horse's hair standing up and looking dull instead of lying flat and looking glossy. It is usually a sign that the horse is cold, ill or both.
