House the spinal column which runs through the centre of the bone from the brain to the base of the tail, passing 'messages' to all parts of the body via the nervous system. Seven cervical make up the bones of the neck, which include both the Atlas and Axis vertebrae. These vertebrae are freely jointed to provide a wide range of movement.
18 thoracic the thoracic spinous processes are larger in the early vertebrae reaching their maximum height at the fourth vertebrae and gradually reducing in size to the fifteenth or sixteenth vertebrae. This is the horse's withers and where the saddle is placed, over generation we (horsemen/women) have bred horses to have a wither to help keep the saddle from sliding round the horse. Wild and some native ponies have no wither.
6 lumber the form the loins. They are in a gap between the end on the ribcage and the pelvis; therefore, muscle and cartilage only support them.
5 sacral go through the pelvis and are fused together, forming a strong base for the pelvis.
15 - 20 coccygeal vertebrae form the bones of the tail (dock), these are freely moving giving a wide range of movement. |

(larynx) a short tube between the throat and windpipe (oesophagus). It regulates the air intake, protects against inhaling dust, and is the site of the vocal cords. It is composed of three single cartilage's: - cricoid, thyroid and epiglottis and one paired: - arytenoid. |
