How To Take A Horse's Pulse and Respiration

Pulse

36 To 40 beats per minute at rest

Use your fingers to find the horse's pulse - your thumb has its own pulse, and could confuse things.

You will find the pulse easily in two places:

1. Under the top of the lower jaw

2 On the foreleg level with the knee-joint

Then count the pulse for one minute.

Respiration

8 To 15 Breathes Per Minute

Stand to one side of the horse's tail, and you will see the ribcage rise and fall, count either the rise or fall.
