How to Fit a Bridle

Make sure the throat lash and noseband are undone. Standing on the near side (left) of your horse along side his neck put the reins over his head and neck.

Fitting a Bridle 1

Put your right hand under your horse's jaw and pass the bridle to your right hand taking hold of the two cheek pieces.

Hold the bit in your left hand and gently press your horse's gum at the gap between his teeth until he opens his mouth. This will allow you to gently pull the bit up over his tongue by lifting the cheek pieces.

Keep the bit in his mouth and using both hands, gently slide the head piece over his ears, one at a time.

Then pull his forelock over the browband. From the front make sure that the bit, noseband and browband are level and make sure that there are not any twists.

Fasten the throatash - there should be a hands width between the throatlash and your horse's jaw.

Fasten the noseband allowing for two fingers width between it and your horse's nose.

There should be room to fit two fingers under the browband of the bridle

I finally know what I did wrong when trying to get the bit in the horse´s mouth. Thank you.

This page about the bridle is very good. I used to ride a lot when I was younger, and I knew how to tack up. I've started riding again and can remember everything well apart from how to put a bridle on, but you have saved me! Thanx! I wont forget this site when I get my first horse!

This is the best site I have found yet. It has so much information and wonderful tips. I have two girls that are just in love with horses. We are hoping to purchase one soon. Although we have never owned a horse I feel more confident after exploring this site. Thank you!

This is a wonderful site for beginners. I have taken many a trail ride, but I am now getting the opportunity to learn how to properly ride a horse. I have just figured out how to put the bridle on properly, partly with the help of your info on bridles- good descriptions/pictures! I will practice putting it on my own..and I will need to practice with a saddle, but I am confident that I will master that too. Thank you!

I love horses. I have always wanted one for my very own. I finally got one. I have been riding him bareback cause I did'nt have a saddle. Now I have a saddle but I could not put in the bit and bridle. Thanks for the step by step pictures showing me how.

I have been riding for two years and trying to pick up tips about looking after a horse. I even went along to Pony Club with my daughter and learnt how to clean the tack and put it all back together again. I would like to get my own horse but have lacked the confidence - reading about others in the same position has been a boost(its not just me), and I can always call this site up if I need help. Great Site.

Hi having recently had a pony on loan for my daughter, finding it difficult to tack up,she hasnt got the confidence yet to do it so im usualy left to it,but since I am struggling as well people always seem to come to the rescue,so I havnt yet put the bridle on myself so I do feel rather useless I wish they would just let me do it but talk me through what to do that way I would get to learn rather than just escaping from actually doing the chore myself, your tips certanly will help thanks

Hey! This is all really good info. I have to take care of some Shires and other huge work horses over the summer for the police and any info would be great. I have to clean, feed and exercise. I haven't ridden in a few years so any tips would be great! SportsFreak321@cs.com

How does one fit a HACKAMORE properly????

libby   9th Jun 02

Thanks a lot, you've stopped me from hurting a horse by fitting a bridle incorrectly. I've also just realised why my favourite pony William keeps throwing his head around! THank you, and thanks from William too!

BoN^kErS   13th Jun 02

thanks for the tip! now i know how to fit the bidle properly, i will try the correct way the next time i go to riding school again.

sandy: fitting a Hackamore is the same as fitting a bridle, i've been on hackamore a few times. put the headpiece over your horse's ears and the 2 metal pieces just fit nicely beside his mouth on both side... do the throatlash up and have a leather strap to attach on the 2 metal piece under your horse mouth just behind his chin.

Is that the right way? please correct me if i'm wrong thanks! i'm still learning here ya know? xP

very good information but how should I adjust the cheek pieces so they dont pull on his mouth too much but are tight enough not to clank his teeth?
