The Horse Pasture Management Project...
is an important pilot initiative set up by Surrey County Council and the Countryside Agency. The Lower Mole Countryside Project, the National Farmers Union and the British Horse Society all support the Project, which aims to set 'best practice' standards in horse pasture management for the whole country.

The project has come about because Surrey suffers from an increasing population, a decrease in agricultural income but more and more horse ownership, which is particularly noticeable on the urban fringe.

Too many fields for horse paddocks can have a detrimental effect on the local landscape character and quality. And the negative affects of 'horsiculture', particularly on the urban fringe can spill over into the adjoining countryside. Some of these include:

  • Overgrazed and weedy pasture
  • Old white enamel baths used as water troughs
  • Barbed wire entangled fence lines (and worse)
  • Poorly constructed and maintained buildings
  • Damaged and neglected trees and hedges
  • Short term letting agreements which do not encourage tenants to care for the landscape

As well as the enormous economic benefits to the community, and the county, whilst land and buildings are used for horses, they are at least protected from less rural pursuits! And most Surrey residents enjoy seeing horses in the countryside.

The Horse Pasture Project aims to attempt to address all these and over issues over the coming year as well trying to establish new initiatives such as producing a list of contractors, researching the possibility of manure collection for re-cycling, and a rubbish amnesty to find a place for those old unused jumps and barrels!

The Horse Pasture Management Project has no statutory powers but can hopefully help both horse owners and planning officers, and town and parish councils to understand what the other is aiming to achieve, as well trying to promote the tremendous good that horses can do for the people and the landscape, of Surrey.

Equestrian Dreamers & Dreams Wanted

Do you remember your dreams, even one dream?

My thesis, probably to become a book, for dreamwork certification at the Marin Institute for Projective Dreamwork in Northern California is on dreams of equestrians. Because our founder and mentor, Jeremy Taylor, teaches there are at least 20 layers to every dream (wishing, work, daytime garbage, Gestalt, precognition, family, etc) I have postulated that 1 of those layers, in equestrians, has to do with our horse and barn issues even (and sometimes especially) if there are no horses in the "manifest content" (obvious imagery) of the dream.

I am looking at what our dreams say about...

- How horsemanship and riding is a metaphor for life
- How human and equine relationships mirror each other
- Overcoming fears, anxieties, setbacks, and disappointment
- Resolving conflicts at home and at the barn
- Communicating more effectively with our human and equine partners
- Handling competition jitters
- Recovering from an accident or injury
- Relating to family members who don¹t share your passion for horses
- Being able to enjoy horses again after stress, trauma, or layoff from
riding

Early results, including with my own dreams and riding, have been
remarkable. I am open to experimenting with posting dreams to the
Forum--that we can all work on in projective style--but I am especially
looking for people to do 1:1 dreamwork, preferably by phone, but, because we're in so many different countries, potentially by email. All 1:1 work is "medical standard" confidential.

Equestrian Independant - Newsletter for Norfolk and Suffolk
There have been some production problems with the EI since a change of job meant I no longer had the technology! Friends have helped and the latest issue is now out in spite of the difficulties.
However, I feel that in order to keep the high standard of the EI and provide the Norfolk/Suffolk area with a real newsletter they can rely on - a big sacrifice has to be made. So I'm selling my house to raise capital to committ to this project. This means that there will be a gap of a couple of months until the domestic chaos is sorted out and I can obtain the equipment to get back into production.

Until then please continue to email all comments and suggestions to equestrianind@37.com
And remember you can suscribe to 6 issues of the EI for only £2.37!

Your support is very much appreciated.
Louise Pegg [Editor]

Ragwort Research
Liverpool University Veterinary School are trying to fully develop a screening test using a blood sample which can be carried out to establish whether your horse has eaten or is eating Ragwort. If it shown to be positive measures can then be taken to change the horses diet rather than waiting until obvious signs of ragwort poisoning are shown at which stage it would probably be to late to
save the horse.

Further information and details of how you can help this important research can be seen at www.equinescienceupdate.co.uk/ragwort1.htm

First Degree Reiki for Riders...
Pauhla Whitaker, fully insured Reiki Master/Teacher will be holding more of her popular Reiki for Riders days throughout September and October.

You will learn about the origins of Reiki Hands-On Energy Therapy, what it is, how it works, how it can help you, how to use it for people and animals including horses, related concepts such as the Chakras and other forms of complementary therapy, the law as it relates to healing and much more..

The day also includes the Reiki attunement so that you are able to access and work with Reiki healing and practical work on people and animals in order for you to practise before going home and using this gentle form of healing on yourself and your animals right away.

The cost of each one day workshop is £75 per person and includes refreshments, lunch (special diets catered for) and a certificate to show that you have been attuned to First Degree Reiki.

Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 4 people so that you get individual attention but teaching is also available on a one to one basis if you would prefer.

For more information please see the Reiki page at www.pauhla.com or e-mail me at pauhla@pauhla.com for more details or to arrange a date.

Equestrian Independant - Newsletter for Norfolk and Suffolk
The EI was started by me, Louise Pegg, in May 2002. My original idea was to produce a horsey newspaper so that we could keep the cover price really low.

The first issue was printed off on my work printer but now we have a
circulation of 500 and are printed professionally. Paula Curtis joined me and she looks after our advertising.

Our area was crying out for a quality publication of this kind and we have been very well received and supported by local businesses. The EI is currently free and welcomes all enquiries and comments.

You can download a copy of the current newsletter here. It's a Word file that is zipped up and is 982KB in size. It's very well put together and worth the download - Mike.
