Britain's most northerly Equestrian Centre, specialising in Icelandic horses. Tuition is available in the special gaits of the Icelandic horse. Thordale is based on a traditional working croft on the "sunny Westside". Views of the Island of Foula and Fair Isle are a 3 minute ride away. We are a friendly centre where the emphasis is on safe riding.

Hacking along very quiet roads, open heathery hills or sandy beaches. Seals, otters and rare birds can often be seen. Whales and Dolphins and sometimes out in the Voe.

Horse Details

12 horses are available for school use. Young children have quiet Shetlands available. Mostly Icelandic horses with extra gaits of Tolk and Pace. (We have 4 or 5 gaited horses). We also have Fjord horses.

Icelandic horses are used by us as they are so well suited to Shetland's changeable climate. Thoroughbreds do not thrive in a harsh winter. Icelandic's have been used in Shetland for 200 years to work the crofts.
