Lateral 1

Shoulder-in

Shoulder in

The horse bends approximately 30 degrees in from the wall or rail but continues to move parallel to the edge of the arena.

The legs on the inside step across those on the outside leaving three tracks.

Shoulder in feet

Haunches-in, also called Travers

In this the horses haunches are at 30 degrees to the wall or rail but he is looking in the direction he is going - parallel to the edge of the arena.

Renvers

This time the hind legs stay on the outer track and the forehand is brought in by 30 degrees. It is a mirror image of Travers.

In all these lateral exercises depending on the amount of bend in the horse will the front or hind legs be straight on the track or have to cross over each other.

Next - more lateral moves.
