Tack Introduction

The tack consists of the saddle, bridle (incorporating the bit) and any other equipment fixed or placed on the horse - whether practical or decorative.

Saddle

The dictionary defines tack as 'that which fastens one thing to another or things together'. The rider is not fastened to the horse by the tack but would be better described as being 'connected' to the horse by the tack.

Bridle

From this we get the terms,

  • tack up - to put the saddle and bridle on the horse
  • tack room - where tack is stored between use

Tack as seen in western films is 'Western style' which has descended from the needs and practicalities of spending long hours the saddle on ranches. It is generally larger and heavier than the 'English style' but does offer more security for the rider due to the deep saddles and the horn on the front is easy to grab hold of if you feel yourself slipping.

You are most likely to see English style tack in your lessons and that's what we'll concentrate on here starting with the saddle.
