Colouring 1So, you turn up for your lesson and ask, 'which horse am I riding today?' and the reply is, 'Hector - he's the chesnut'; it can help to have some idea of the basic colourings and names they are given. (Due to the variants of browser, video card and monitors the colours in the photographs below may not be reproduced 100% accurately, but hopefully they'll help.)
A bay is a brown coloured horse with black mane, tail and legs (known as points). There are variations of light, bright, mahogany, red and dark bay. All have black skin. They may also have a black dorsal stripe.
Chesnut A chesnut has reddish or gingerish colouration with matching mane and tail. The underlying skin colour is black. There are light, red, bright and liver variants.
Next - more colours.
