Is anyone else teaching their Oh or has taught their OH to ride???

My Fiance Scott is 6ft 3' and weighs 13/14 stone and he is above most riding school limits both hieght and weight wise. I have him riding my 15.2hh welsh cob gelding at the mo and he seems to be doing well. He couldn't ride before he met me and I took him on holiday to Majorca and we went on 3hr beach ride and he had his first long canter and his first ever gallop and he enjoyed it!!!

He is only riding Kia for half an hour at a time so not too much strain on him and he is a good weight cob so very strong.

Were there always limits on riding schools???

Here are a few piccies.....

You're definitely not alone, I've seen people posting in the past about teaching their OHs to ride. Mine's about as likely to sprout wings as he is to climb onto a horse, so I'm always green with envy to hear about other people's adventures!

I love your OH's expression on the middle picture: "Ooookay, here I am, on horse. Er... now what?"

Best of luck to you both. It must be lovely to be able to ride out together.

im hoping my hubby will have a sit on when i get my horse but i think im dreaming really.
I'm relying on my brother in law and dad to have a go first and then the whole male ego/competive streak will kick in and Oh will want a pony ride :D

Your Oh is never to tall/heavy to ride at a riding school. Have you phoned some up and asked about lessons for him.

I think its good for them to learn the basics then go to a school for lessons as many an argument can occur and you will get blamed for any falls and be reminded of this at every given oppertunity!! lol lol lol

My OH is absolutely terrified of horses and had never touched one till we got together. He rode a palamino of ours and loved it but is too scared round their feet to actually come up often.

At a show the other week he had a go on Flint and luckily I had my camera there ready!!

My OH on a horse? a few weeks ago I would have burst out laughing, he says he would get on Pickle but only because he knows there is no chance in the world I would ever let him.
BUT I declared I was going on holiday on my own :D a riding holiday :D I didnt intend reverse psychology but he now wants to come along and get on a horse, I suppose I should be greatfull but I did actually want to go on my own :o

My OH has ridden my horse quite a few times. Mostly just hacking him out with me on another horse as he can be quite sharp in the school. Am now trying to persuade him that we really need two horses so he can keep this up.

My OH simply isn't interested in riding. Not only that but at well over 20 stone he'd have problems finding somewhere with a horse that could cope with him.

I know that when I returned to riding back in March 2006 at 17 1/2 stone I had a right job trying to find a RS to take me and then I physically couldn't cope with doing what I wanted to be able to do but then I wasn't a biginer and had higher aspirations.

Even if hubby did want ti ride there is no no way I would teach him. I see this as worse than teaching someone to drive and I'm not sure our relationship would cope :D

Mine has supposedly come close to getting on Daffy once. I'm not sure I believe him, as no amount of persuasion got him to even consider it afterwards.

Sent him a text yesterday about seeing a guy in breeches and how guys in well fitting breeches always look good, and he said it was chaps or nothing. So I think I might buy him chaps for his birthday :p

Mine had never even touched a horse before I bought Cherry but he rode her a few times last spring, including having a couple of half-hour lessons, until we came to the conclusion that he was perhaps a little heavy for her as she has had a tendon injury in the past. If he were a competent rider she would probably cope better.

That said, he seemed to be one of those lucky ones (the expression "duck to water" springs to mind) and he was actually cantering and even popped a little teensy jump on his third attempt...

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a179/domane/Dom9.jpg

Knowing him as I do I am absolutely AMAZED that he did this. He doesn't hanker to ride but if money were no object I know he would happily hack out with me on one of his own..... :)

My OH has started to enjoy horses! He has learnt how to put a rug on... feeding regimes ( I would trust him with sugar beet!! ) and best of all hes up for riding.

This is us on his first ride out when we went to www.murthwaitegreen.co.uk

He really enjoyed it!

Heres my ex being attacked by our resident shetland, Bobbin. I've got one of him bareback on J somewhere, which was pretty brave considering the size of J compared to him!

Out of interest - Do any of the male members have partners who do not ride?

Up until my current OH my motto has been "my men ride", so have put them on a horse at some point or it has been the highway for them! Just kidding ;), but nevertheless I've made them ride and all have after getting past the initial fraight been really excited and enjoyed it, some even so that they have carried on riding after we broke up.

My current OH hasn't ridden purely for the fact that I don't have my own horse and he refuses to pay for such a silly thing.. But as soon as I get myself a horse, he will get to try it out. If he doesn't like it, fine, but he needs to at least try. I know he is terrified with the idea even though he keeps telling me that if he really wanted he would kick my a***e in Polo anyday, even if he has never been on a horse. Men!

This is my plan! I think that OH would be good at riding, he's one of those people and to be honest I think that he would enjoy something like XC, he doesn't see the point of dressage (I think he called it poncing about with the horses nose tucked in...)

He had sat on horse before, but he just had no interest, I can't understand if he's not afraid why won't he try it... one day...

14 years you say..? Right, that's 13 to go...

This is OH on a horse we loaned, while I borrowed the yards 'safe hack' to escort him on his first ride out.He loved it and was smitten. He now owns his own (guess who looks after him  ) and he thought this riding lark was easy, til he got on my horse and feared for his life, ha ha ! Now he has a little more respect for the finer details of riding. We hack out together and I make 'suggestions' as we go, but as for formal teaching in the school, thats a bit like a husband teaching the wife to drive a car, so I leave it to a RI. I can't even watch, because I keep wanting to butt in ! Ahhh, the patience of RI's !
That said, he's a natural with an uncomplicated view to riding, such as 'I think I'll try jumping today'
Its great having him involved tho, such fun to load the neds up and go off exploring for the day, particularly if there's a pub along the way .:D
Course, I did have to absolutely insist that, no he couldn't wear a cowboy hat instead of a 'poncy' riding hat !

I always assumed it meant "other half". Could also mean "obnoxious husband" or "old hen", but somehow I don't think it does. Please correct me if I am wrong!

My OH is wonderful on the ground. I have two so we do one each. He mucks out, fills water and hay nets, rugs, turns out/in. He has been out on a couple of hacks last year on nice days and once practiced rising trot in the arena, but thats as far as it went  Its not really for him and he says it hurts his man bits! Is lovely to get so much help on the yard though.

Any more piccies???

Scott now realises that he isn't alone and that I didn't do it just so as we would have something in common but he does want to get a big plod of his own so he can come out with me but that will have to wait until we're married I think............

My OH started lessons when I returned to riding. He's not really into lessons though, and finds school work boring, unless he can jump! However, he loves riding, has a good seat, and is sympathetic, so maybe not technically correct, but a not bad rider!

Here he is over xmas on Molly......

Thanks Denbenj, she's the daughter of my lad (now gelded ) and she's a star, very easy going and push button novice ride. Her father and mother were rescued close to death from starvation and not long after, the mare was discovered to have given birth overnight in the field, and she was the result !
Her dad is owned by us for OH to ride and he's the same easy temperament but with a wicked sense of humour at OH's expense :D :D

Lovely pics/vids everyone :)

My OH has ridden a few times. He came out on a hack with me at the trekking centre I worked at. I put him on the safest gentleman, a Clydesdale, and he did mostly walk and a bit of trot. We also went riding twice in Spain but that was largely walking. He had fun both times but he has yet to have a go on Lady. He has seen her misbehave so that may have put him off! But he says he does like her and trusts her not to kick now so that's a start! No problem with her carrying him either as she's 16.2hh ID x and he's 6ft and about 13/14 stone.

Out of interest - Do any of the male members have partners who do not ride?

I do: my OH is interested in taking lessons, and would have done so this year when I came back to riding after a break, if she hadn't hurt her back. So it was Pilates for her, riding for me for about six months!

Now we've moved to a new area, and I expect we'll at least go on the odd trail ride together and maybe have lessons once we've settled in.
