It is one of the most ancient breeds of horse in the world.
There is an Akhal Teke Stud in the UK here: http://www.gsuttle.free-online.co.uk/kyzyltekes.htm

Verrrry old breed, there's a couple of Newrider members with them. They're famous for their metallic coats which no other breed has.
There are very few in the UK though (less than 600 I believe) and they're pretty pricey!

No problem - they are very beautiful horses, the equine verison of a greyhound (if that makes sense)I wanted one years ago, when you could not get them.

Hi there- I own an akhal teke I will be taking back to the UK in April. I bought her from one of the top studs in the world, in southern Russia, I know the guy there and can halp your friend out. Plus if she wants to import, she's welcome to help me share my transport back!.....:D

Just one word EXPENSIVE!
I can tell you transport costs from Spain, Portugal, Austria and Hungary but not the former Soviet states.(£750-£850)

There are partbred Akhal Tekes for sale in the UK - perhaps your friend might start off with one of those?

depends who you go through.... you want to avoid Russian transporters and find a sharer. From the Belarus border, a very reputable English tranporter can do it for about 800 pounds.... All in, you can do it for about 1500-2000 pounds (that's what I'm budgeting). A Russian transporter may be cheaper but way too risky imo.

I wouldn't go for a partbred.... it's a rare breed, you want to try and keep them pure. Plus they're such special horses it's worth going for the real thing.:) :) :)

Svenja if you can sneak an Elite graded buckskin or perlino mare in with your mare I would be tempted! What price would you pay for a good quality Akhal Teke mare? (Just asking you understand!:D )

svenja

not selling my Elite bucksin mare... :D :D :D but for a good mare you'd pay about 10000 dollars (although they sometimes try and ask for the same amount in euros or more....), they're much cheaper than stallions. I bargained mine down to 8000 dollars which was really good as she is a great grandaughter of Gelishikli (founder of the said line) -but I was quite lucky. Plus no quarantine from Russia (at least not from the south or the moscow region).

I got her at the Stavropol stud, which is one of the very best- along with the Turkmen National Stud. The horses there were amazing.... They lead out their best stallions first until you're practically blinded by their beauty and ready to sell your soul to buy one of their offsping.... then they take you to see the herds.... My friend who was there with me to act as a moderating influence :o almost bought one, and he isn't even horsy!

About what I expected! Maybe one day I will have one, I have loved them for years but never actually met one. They used to have the reputation for being very 'hot' and bad-tempered and difficult, yet everything I read now suggests they are nice, kind horses.

How rare are they Svenja?

svenja

not sure exactly how many there are, about 3000 in the world I think... The best ones are in Russia or Turkmenistan, where the breed is very tightly regulated. You can get nice ones cheaper.... but for the very best, with top bloodlines, you have to pay that price, especially now they've become a luxury fashion accessory for rich Russians. Ten years ago you could get one for 500 dollars, as the breed had almost fallen into oblivion.

They have a reputation for being hot headed and rebellious, true, but that's because they are extremely intelligent and loyal, very much a one person horse. My little mare, now I've gained her trust, will do her very best for me, but she can be difficult with other people. You cannot use force as she will just fight back, but she learns things incredibly quickly.

I had a look at some websites and yes, 10,000 dollars seems about the going rate <gulp>.
Perhaps I will win the lottery tonight? I do like them very much, perhaps I ought to go and meet one?

well, you're welcome to come and meet Pielena- she will be living in Hertfordshire from April....:D

Of course, if you're feeling adventurous, you should visit the Stavropol stud (I'd rule Turkmenistan out at the momnet:rolleyes: ). They don't have their own website but their horses are the best, and deserve their high reputation.

Check out these picks from the Stavropol stud (this is a link to the studfarm via maak, the breed register in Russia. It' s in Russian, click the links on the right to see some of the Stavropol horses).

There was a registered stallion for sale in the UK recently for about £6000. Looking at your prices I wonder what was wrong with him!

10000 dollars is £5,000 pounds these days, and that's for the top horses - ie not just registered, but Elite graded (ie World Champion bloodlines).... so £6000 sounds about right, given that that was in the UK, where the breed is less well known.
You can get nice, registered ones that aren't top grade (ie not necessarilly the best for breeding) for half the price.

My mare is incredibly comfortable to ride, and has very graceful movements. Although she is long-backed like all the breed, her transitions are good. I tried an Akhal Teke (almost bought him in fact) who was a ten year old dressage stallion trained for prix St George. He was a grandson of Absent (who won Dressage Olympics yonks ago). I had a vid of him I'll try and dig out for you- he had the most amazing impulsion and movements.

I'm quite tempted to in the future, but not for a few years... she's only five so there's plenty of time!

Yeah he's okay - his stable manners are much better. Im now just feeling bad that he never gets ridden . I dont think it will really hurt him - I much prefer just grooming him than doing anything serious.
However, if I wanted something just to groom I could have bought it for £100 :o

Hi svenja

sent you a PM but now my friend has made up her mind and she wants to get a hanovarian warmblood. She wants an allrounder ie jumps like a stag, shows like a pro and has paces like a dream, her words not mine lol  and she isn't very confident about the akal tekhe as she thinks that they sound too rebellious for her and she doesn't want to overhorse herself. She has found an eight yr old hano that she can afford and has a 6 yr old dutchy x as a back up.

Thanks for all the advice as I have now found another horse breed that looks out of this world!! :D Have you got any pics of Pielena??? Post them if you can!!!

hi there- have pm'd you back. If she wants a good all-rounder a hanoverian is probably just the thing. Akhal Tekes are very different- they can make very good allrounders but I think you definitely want to be a fan of the breed before you take one on!:D
My computer is playing up so can't post new pics but here's a link to an old thread in which I posted some pics:

Oh! Svenja! Your mare is absolutely beautiful and you bought her just 3 days after I bought my 5 year old Spanish mare.

She truly is a stunning horse, what a fantastic head and colour <swoon>. You are lucky. <green with envy>
