you can hop on as soon as the needle is out! thye sometimes feel a bit rotten afterwards, so work hard enough to make them sweat isn't advised as they might not be feelling up to it.

So a lesson 22-23 hours afterwards would be OK you think, as long as I took it easy if he felt off (well, I would go home, actually...).

I have always been told not for 24 hours because they could sweat the injection out of the system.

i asked a vet about that and she said it was the other way round - i had also asusmed it was in case they lost the stuff through the sweat, and she said no, it's that they mgiht feel off colour so shouldn't be asked to do hard work in case.

a lesson the day after should be fine as long as you pay extra attention to him.

my vet said its a misconception that they have to be left a few days after getting a jag.

I always leave B a day, as I know how I feel after a needle has been in me!!

I think I will attend the lesson, but advise RI, and possibly spend more time concentrating on my position and letting Oscar trot slowly in circles while I bounce around with no stirrups than anything too energetic for him! It will be almost 24 hours after.

Thanks for your advice!

When I was a kid I used to ride my ponies to the vets for their injections. Never had any probs :D

Interesting that this has come up I can always rely on NR to answer my questions, ha ha.

My girl is getting her jab on friday morning and I have a lesson on friday evening. The vet always recommended to me that she should have 48-72hrs off, so was a bit wary of doing this although when i spoke to my RI she said she should be fine as long as we take it easy and work me hard instead, does this sound acceptable or should I give the lesson a miss???

My vet always says there is no need to rest them, just get on and ride!!!:D

I always ride (and so do the others at my stable) right after injections if that's the plan for the day. However, a few times my horse had a "reaction" to his shot, given in the neck, so his neck got so sore he couldn't even put it down to graze! (It was a funny site... watching him looking wistfully down at the grass, but too sore to actually reach down and get it) That soreness actually lasted a few days, and then he was fine. His neck looked totally normal the whole time, I should mention.
Anyways, I don't think that is a common reaction, so keep your eye out for something like that, but otherwise there shouldn't be a problem with riding 24 hours after vaccination.
