B has been very itchy since xmas.

At first I thought it was cos he hadn't had both his rugs removed for the three days I wasnt able to get up to the yard (he wears a cooler under his turn out and stable rugs) and hadnt been groomed those days either.

But he's back to his usual routine of getting groomed everyday.

He was itchy at the top of his tail and his shoulders where his rug lies. I had a good look for any sign of nasty little creatures, but couldnt see any. One of the women on the yard gave me a bottle of Ditch to use on him as her horse had been itchy with no apparent cause and this had taken it away. So I've been rubbing it into his shoulders and top of his tail for the past four days or so and he's definatly getting less itchy, but he is still itchy.

Today he rubbed at his mane on one of the doors and got it all matted.

He has already broken a lot of the hairs at the top of his tail, I really dont want him to ruin his mane as well, its taken me about a year to grow it out!

Also, when taking him to the field this morning, I noticed he's scratched a chunk about the size of a one pence piece from his cheek. It's just the hair thats gone and the skin it a bit scabby. You cant really see it as he's so hairy.

So, any ideas guys?

I think I'm going to delouse him just to be on the safe side.

id use the lice powder as a precaution.

Has he got any other scabby bits. ringworm possibly?
Or mites of come sort. You can really see them with the eye.

Or with him being groomed now the skin might be itchy due to desquamation (flaking skin). If you have had peeling skin from sunburn you could kind of get how it would feel, once it starts to come off it gets really itchy.

Hope you find the cause soon and he stopps rubbing himself so he doesnt end up baldy :D
