What I can use instead of the plastic blocks, multijumps or combi blocks that are commercially available - the prices are horriffic!

I have used poly crates in the past, but I'm scared the horses stand in them and slip or get hurt.

Any Ideas?

Beer or milk crates - ask your milkman if he has any spare/slightly broken

Oil drums - can usually get these cheaply from scrap yards/businesses.

Road cones - although I wont suggest theft... you can get special cups to go on top at £16 a pair inc postage on ebay - i have some and they're great

I use cones that seemed to jump in the back of my car one day........;)

and I got my dad to cut a hole in the middle wide enough for a pole to sit in and hollow out the point at the top for the pole to sit on so I have three heights that I can set the jump to and the cones are bright so they look more like proper jumps.

I have barrels as well and they're good and I got my dad to half them and make round cuts in them so I can have spreads as well, you can paint them too.

Buckets are good too. stack them to make them higher or use tyres. There are always some lying around on the country roads near my place and I pick them up when I see them as theyre stackable and heavy but will fall down if collided with.

These are just a few that I used before my dad could make me proper wings.

If you know anybody that can hammer wood together why not go aroung the builders merchants and ask for any broken pallets?? You can pull them apart and build them into wings all you need is a cheap fence post drill some holes in it and attach a base and sides to make a proper school wing.

Hope this helps!!!

I use boxes and buckets but they can only be one height.
We don't have a milkman so does anyone know where I can get some milk/beer crates from?

Most pubs have a spare crate lying around...

you are in scotland - find a shop/ice cream van owner who gets deliveries from Barrs (the irn bru people) i used to work on an ice cream van and turns out the owner paid a 50p deposit on each of the crates so I paid him 50p each for about 20 of them. they are probably still in the old field i used to livery in! they stack well too.

another good alternative is to use tyres as wings. go to kwik fit/ budget and ask if you can get some old tyres - they recycle them anyway so probably won't mind you having some, just stack them up and use as wings, from 6inches to as high as you want!

barrels, fences, crates, tree stumps, chairs, tables, piled dog beds, hay and straw bales, feed buckets, boxes, tyres (great!), tree branches (still attached), scrap from dumps and other bits and bobs (i.e. a chest of drawers) . . . quite literally anything and everything, as unlike poles they don't need to be of a certain weight/size/shape/knock-down-ability!
i also have used wood from a blow-down shed.

oh, as well as natural obstacles such as ditches, fences and hedges, trees and stumps, warped roots, rubbish and dumped stuff, especially from cars . . . ;-)

Tyres are a good bet and our local village garage is only too pleased to give them away, as they have to pay to have them recycled otherwise. If you ask, I'm sure any garage would be happy for you to have them. The garage near us puts them on the side of the road outside the garage and whichever of us gets there first gets them. There are now about five families racing to get them on the way back from the school run!

I use chairs, although its probably not the safest thing. I get a choice of 1-2-and 3 feet. Have also used plastic tubes by my horse started breaking them for fun.

Was going to suggest plastic garden chairs.

We're not supposed to jump in our new school - so we only have trotting poles, but people have started sneaking the plastic garden chairs in and using them for jumps.

(The old school with the jumps is too muddy this time of year)

My friend once put a canvas rug over a wheelbarrow and used that as a jump! :0 It's kind od hard to find things for wings when you jump over 1 metre all the time :(

Dear Sir,

We were pleased to tell you that EVA Jumping Blocks could be a wonderful replacement for the plastic Blocks.

EVA Jumping Blocks are much lighter in weight, easy to carry or move around, and more important, because of the EVA material, it would not hurt either the horse or the riders.

tyres and cones :D garages will give you as many tyres as you want and you can stack them for wings, or use as fillers.... cones are really easy to cut a D shape out of with a stenley knife to sit the pole in - saves buying teh cup things to sit on top and that way you can have a few different heights in 1 cone ....

We used to get old tyres from KwikFit, and oil cans from the tip and a couple of cones which we cut 'D' shaped holes in with stanley knives. Other thinks we used were posties boxes/milk crates and proper oil barrels - again got from the tip.

I made an XC course with my friend out of lots of the above with poles made from saplings my dad cut down in the garden and lots of branches for brush. They were excellent, we got 5 of our horsey friends to bring their pones down and have a little XC comp of our own! :)
