i am currently trying to teach pete to bow:) .i hold a carrot between his legs then he stretches his neck down to the ground and slightly raises one hoof:) .
Once he has learnt to do this on command in-hand how do i teach him to do it under saddle:confused::) ?
also are there any beneficial tricks i can teach him:confused: :) ? (please write how to teach them as well)
thanks!! xxxxxx

I once taught my horse to rear on command - very bad idea! He then reared when he felt like it! Luckily he's out of that habit now!!

It's a good idea to focus on things that really are useful skills ... like having a cue for 'move your butt toward me' ... and move your butt away, step back, step forward, shoulders over, shoulders towards .. etc etc. Perhaps not so obviously flashy as a horse that bows and such... but honestly, when you can manouvre your horse really precisely from teh ground or under saddle, you'll soon find situations to impress people (narrow gates for example) - plus your horse will just tend to be listening and responding better to you.

Used to ride a palomino gelding that was a film pony. Used to have all kinds of fun on him. Rearing and bucking to command, especially when passing a group of young men. He had the most beautiful collected canter, it was as slow as the other horses' walk when we were out on a ride. One day, I'll try and teach Falcon that but he's not up to it at the moment (sadly). If anyone can give me any advice on how to train a pony for collected canter, I'd be grateful.

well he already knows how to back, forward, sideways ect ect so i thought
i would teach him something to keep him interested, focused and its something to
work at. I did teach him to rar on command but i have realised it wasnt a
good idea, altough he didnt use it against me he could've! lol, anyway
thanks for the avice etc, ill get some pics if he does master it! xxx

I taught my horse to bow with one leg tucked underneath her. Once she learnt the principle of it i then weaned her onto doing it with a tap under the knee with a schooling stick. I then taught her to to pray (both legs tucked underneath her) by tapping the other leg as she was going down. I can then start using the stick as i'm on board just below the knee and she'll get the idea. That how mine was taught but you may find another technique to use. Make sure that your weight is off the forehand so your leaning back to save their backs and allow them to move as freely as possible. Have fun.

HI Aimee,

You are making a good start with the bow. Before you teach the one legged bow, it is best to start with obeisance, the 2 legged stretch, then progree to one legged bow.,The obeisance is a better equal stretch for both shoulders. Before you use the carrot, stretch your pony out (move front legs sihglty forward, as you dont want him to buckle at the knees when he goes over.

Other tricks - use a pedestal. 2 feet, 4 feet, rotate. Then jambette -hold one leg out - always do on a pedestal, never reward elsewhere whilst teaching. JAmbette strengthens shoulders so makes teaching spanish walk easier. For loads of info, look on imagineahorse (there is a website and discussion forum). In the files you will find lots of info.

My horse rears on command but upon a aid he's very good and only does it when ask he bobs when he is excited but since he dosent rear full height unless asked to it's never been a problem. He also bows but i havent got him to bow under saddle yet i intend to attack that again in the summer. I know many people have mixed feelings on rearing which i understand but i treat this like everything else i teach my horse with respect.

I taught mine with clicker training so I don't tap the legs or anything. I don't like the 'head up' version of bowing because it hollows the horse and the whole point for mine was to learn behaviours that help flexibility and in particular teach lifting of the back and withers. I haven't taught under saddle (yet).

I had a lovely pinto mare that loved learning tricks. So I taught her to bow (treats between the legs). She'd touch her chest & lift her leg but of course once the treats stopped, everytime she'd see me, she'd bow in the hopes of getting a treat. It wasn't so cute after a while;)
