Its very difficult to read your writing in that colour but I think what it said was about having trouble stopping your pony. What bit is the pony in and what aids do you use.How does the pony resist you?

Is this a riding school pony or your own? Does it happen in the school or when you're hacking out? Is the pony following the others and not listening to you?

As nutkin asked, what aids are you giving to ask for him to stop? Does he just ignore you or does he do something else?

hi sara

whenever i see you ride bramble it looks like she really leans on you.

the other thing is cos she kicks she has to go at the back and she loves being at the front.

P.S see you on thursdayx

Well that's because she feels safer and happier with her friends. If you are trying to get her to stop, and hang back from the rest of the ride, you will nearly always find it difficult. Can you take her round in a half circle across the school instead? It depends really what you are trying to do with her.

Could you also please write in normal English, not text speak, as us oldies and others who do not speak English as a first language can find it difficult to understand:)

sara - what does your riding instructor tell you to do to stop the pony (these are called the 'aids')?

Unfortunately a lot of riding school ponies are like this, they want to follow the others and don't listen to their riders. It can be really difficult when you're trying to learn because no matter what you do they don't listen to you :(

as baymare has said the aids are what you use to make the pony stop and go.I presume you have group lessons so the pony is used to just following the others.Have you asked your riding instructor about this? just pulling on the reins can make a horse or pony ignore you and used without your seat it is actually incorrect. To ask the pony to stop you need to think about growing taller and squeeze your legs around the pony at the same time as squeezing on the reins. It takes practise to get it right where you manage to do all 3 things at the same time but you will get there.

thankyou for your help

You're welcome.:D I hope it works out for you and that you get the pony to do what you are asking.Just keep on asking and insisting the pony does as he is told and before long the pony will do whatever you ask.

use your voice, quietly and firmly say "and walk", don’t pull the rains as such but gentle squeeze them, if this doesn’t work, gently pull and loosen and pull and loosen - don’t yank at them constantly as this gives her something to pull against. Be calm the whole time, take your time.

With the biting use your voice - sharply and firmly say "no". If this doesn’t work do the same thing but tap (not hard!!!) her on the bum.

--- This is only what I would do, I am not an instructor ------:p :p

KEEP TRYING AND DONT GIVE UP!

as for tips for getting a bridle on, if your having trouble getting the bit in just tease the mouth by sliding your thumb in the gap where the bit goes ( towards teh back of mouth this usually gets the horse to open its mouth so you can get the bit in and get the bridle onto the horses head.

When you are removing a bridle always try to catch the bit and help with the weight so you dont clang his teeth with the bit. You find alot of people just pull bridles of bashing the horses teeth.

Get your instructor to show you its so hard to explain! but practise makes perfect i'm sure before not to long you will be fine x

You could try apple or mint flavoured bit wipes, they make the bit taste yummy and encourage salivation and are recommended (by the manufacturer) for horses that are difficult to bit?

May not help him to stop though

another useful thing to remember when putting on a bridle is to have the horses head bent towards you and stand to the side of them so as they are unable to lift their head up out of reach. This will make it much easier.

with your hand over the nose but their heads bent around towards you they are physically unable to lift their heads so it will work for you although you may need to be firm in insisting that they bend their head towards you to begin with.

Don't worry about popping a thumb in his mouth, he'll be used to that! Check with his owner/RS that he doesn't bite if you're worried, most don't.

The horse has several cm's of gum, called barrs (sp?) on either side of the jaw, where the bit sits, if you just touch it with a thumb you may find he'll sense this as a trigger to open up. Why not have a quick look when you don't need to tack up, just pop a thumb inside his lips and gently feel for the gummy area. Ask RS to supervise if you're worried.

I must be lucky, my mare doesn't enjoy her school work much :( but when presented with the bit I tell her to "say ahhhhhh" and she opens up for the inevitable - bless :p I've never had the struggle you're facing so my advice is purely academic(ish) :D

Have a look on the BHS site and on the NR home page as there's loads of training info such as tacking up which will be helpful.

I've had so many what I'd call 'silly' little concerns in my one whole year of horse ownership and this is just the place to aire them without feeling daft about it isn't it? :D

Good luck!
