Everyone feels like that at some point. Because the improvement isn't always something like cantering when you haven't cantered before or jumping for the first time it can be difficult sometimes to know if you've made any improvement or not unless someone tells you (and even then we don't always believe them!).

Was there anything in your last lesson that you had difficulty with or just wasn't working?

Do you have private or group lessons? I always preferred private because you can get more feedback than you would in a group.

Why not start a lesson journal so that you can look back on things and see how much you have learned over the past few weeks and months?

I'm sure that it's only a temporary thing and that you'll get back on track again soon. No-one learns to ride overnight so it can be a long and sometimes frustrating process but it IS worth it :D

All the best x

I guess we all get like this at some stage in our riding lives - but - if your RI says you're improving then, I guess you must be. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just take it as it comes. Riding is meant to be fun, chill out and relax.
Or, perhaps you're worried about something else!!
All the best.

Improvement come in rises and plateaus, you are on a bit of a plateau probably, don't worry, another rise is on the horizon!

You cannot expect to improve lesson by lesson, you need time to consolodate what you have learned and then move up again.

I remember when I was first learning, I was desperate to canter and it took over a year until I was allowed! I think it did me good in the end though as I have established quite a good seat etc. Maybe having hacking out would help you put into practice what you have learnt and give you back confidence in your ability. Don't lose heart:)

Welcome to the joys of any skill-based physical activity! :) As has been stated previously, skills develop with rises and plateaus, and my personal favourite, the giant dip before everything comes together and you feel that you cannot do anything correctly. It's your body's way of integrating and internalising the new lessons and skills and getting them just right. Just hang in there, and it will get better. Also, outside stressors have huge impacts as well on our performance. Again, just be strong and tough it out. If you keep working at it and try not to get frustrated, it will get improve.

I felt exactly the same today. Had a really good lesson last week then today I was so focussed on getting my leg position correct for the rising trot I forgot about direction and had hands going in all directions. Forgot about foot position and must have looked a character out of the loony tunes cartoon lol. I have another lesson tomorrow so hopefully can progress tomorrrow.

I always think it is a matter of gritting your teeth and telling yourself that you will get there. At least you will be able to recognise areas where you can improve. But as everyone has said. dont be so harsh at yourself. Just enjoy it and it will come together in the end.

I found the rising trot the hardest pace to ride properly. Took me ages before I mastered it.
