Home Made Fly Repellant

Ellie is beginning to be plagued by flys and I have heard that there are some very effective 'home receipes' that can be made up and sprayed onto the poor, hassled hoss.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

i used to do equal parts of cold tea and vinegar, crush loads of garlic, add it, and leave it to stew for a while. then strain it and decant it into a spray bottle.

The person who mentioned making your own spray to me thought it contained cold tea, but she wasn't sure of quantities. Thanks for that - I now know what I'll be mixing in the kitchen this evening....

I know THEO makes her own fly repellant that smells lovely(she did me some last year)..doesnt have garlic in!!!Its got citronella, lavendar? tea tree...i think?ohh you'll have to ask her!But it does work and i usually give my riding hat a good spray before a hack and the flys dont come near!

where would you get citronella from? I know it's put into candles and sprays and things, but I'm not quite sure what it is?

Theo gets her oils from health food shops or even the chemist!
Ive also seen on equiriders web site they have a few different recipies for fly spray!!!!

I'll go on a search! Like the idea of spraying it on your hat to keep flies away - good tip!

I've made homemade flyspray by generously tossing fresh mint and little bags of eucalyptus (from the spice aisle) into a spaghetti size pot and simmered it for however long till it smelled strong. Its a hassel cause then you must strain it well also. I've also added skin so soft (from Avon) and citronella to regular fly spray to try to make it stronger but reasonably safe to use. The home cooked version will "ferment" if left too long in the spraybottle. Its amazing how quickly I can use up those store bought sprays with only 2 animals. Around my barn area the hanging fly traps with the bait inside that you add water to do the job well, if you can stand the odor and have an out of the way place to put it. Scatter baits for flies work help too if you don't have ducks or chickens to consume them before the flies do.
