I think you have to find a farier who is willing to train you up, then go for a college interview.

My friend went on basic metal/blacksmithing night calsses before even applying so she took a load of stuff to the interview she had made, so they could see her basic metal working skills. This she did for her second interview as they failed her first one.

There are no short cuts, it is a hard slog for 5 years at college AND in the field shoeing osses and making shoes.

You will sweat like a pig, very attractive, the sweat runs off the end of your nose in summer and literally drips off your face. You will end up with hands like a gorilla and a bad back! But it's a handy thing to be able to do!

Once you have a farrier willing to train you and a college willing to offer you a place you are all set.

i was thinking the same....... after 3 years of 'academic' study at uni i want to get out and do the horses. Mum thought it would be good to be a farrier... but you would be surrounded by guys in your course (not bad i suppose....), your back will break, not all the horses are good to shoe... and neither are the owners!

Good luck if you go for it Tuscan Dream it would be good to see more female farriers!

My friends sister became a farrier ( Helen Fearron, Warrington) She is only a slip of a girl but manages great. She has a really natural way with the horses.

I remember all the hard work she put into it... but worth it in the end I would say.

I am a bit nervous with a horse a dont know, and the last thing I would want to do is pick its back feet up!!

I think you certainly need to be gutsy to be a farrier:D

take a look

The lass who taught me is about 8 stone wringing wet. But you don't need brute strength to she a horse. You need to be hard, no sloppy muscles mind.

Where some male farriers fail with attitude, and wind the horses up, women farriers can often shoe a difficult horse because they don't come at it with male vibes.

BTW you'll learn to swear long and hard and loud! ;)
