Ok I know most of the good show jumpers here are really good but I need advice because I am embrassing myself and my horse in the show jumping ring! Firstly we trot 1 metre courses because he wont move out of trot because I reckon I get so many nerves and panic! But the thing is I hate small courses so I have to do the 1 metre courses. I think its a matter of pride and also I can jump any hieght with my horse once its not a course and mildly formal! :( What should I do?

work him on the flat to get a good showjumping forward canter and then introduce poles into the equation and gradually build up the height of your fences til he canters them willingly and he is going forwards properly.Horses find it easier to jump from a trot than a canter so I would also suggest that although you think its embarrassing to jump smaller fences that you go for a smaller course for now.To work on your nerves try going to a few clear round events rather than shows for a while so there is less tension. It would help you to get a good trainer who can work with you both.

Check the fit of tack as well, and make sure he's eating enough.

His tack fits him perfectly because I got his back and tack checked about 2 months ago. He is only on hay at the moment! Thanks for the advice though and I will try your suggestion nutkin

What bit do you jump in at Shows?? Do you put a harder bit in for Shows?? I school my cob in a snaffle. But when I get to Shows he get all anxious and bolts everywhere. So for the safety of him, me and other people I pop a gag in. I have to remember however that I need to move the reins up when we are in the ring. Or he will not go into canter. Mainly because I am so nervous and pulling back on the reins too much...:o

This horse isnt going forwards, putting a stronger bit in will make matter worse!

Eh no I school in a snaffle and always keep a snaffle on with him because he doesnt need anything stronger :)
