Hi everyone, i'm just getting ready to book my first riding lesson, but i was wondering what is the maximum height and weight you should be. I'm 6ft 3 and just under 15 stone, im not a large person i'm quite slim and fit but my height adds all this extra weight. Will this be a problem for me or the horse?

15 stone is not a problem for most well built cobby horses. If you are fit too and in proportion you and the horse will be fine.

At my RS they have no upper height resriction, but they have a weight limit of 13 stone. However, they have three cobs capable of carrying much heavier weights so they don't completely re-in-force this rule. Plus they mainly teach children and young adults so they havent found a need to raise the weight restriction. It varies between RS to RS as each school has different horses of different weight carrying abilites.

But, I dont think any RS will send you away on either you height are your weight unless they dont have any well built horses. They do want your business after all.

Good look with booking your first lesson, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! :D

When I took up riding again in March last year I had a job finding a school that could take me as I was 17 1/2 stone. I found one eventually by just walking in off the street and this gave me some of the motivation I needed to drop down to a size 12/14 again :D

As Wally says - 15 stone would be OK for a less fine horse.

If I were you though, I would mention my weight when phoning to book a lesson just to make sure they have a horse available which is suitable.

Good luck and have fun! :)

You'll need to check with the school. Many RS have weight limits. If you can go during the week or at off peak times they will be more likely to bend the rules for you :)

While 15 stone is perfectly fine for bigger or well built horses and certainly not heavy for 6'3, it is over many schools limits so definately mention it when you book.

If you are east london MountMascals (http://www.mountmascalstables.com/) at bexleyheath has a 16 stone limit - I often ride there and while a little overcrowded in the school at times they have a good selection of horses so you aren't stuck with just the one horse every time - weekday evening privates would be my recommendation - often have the place to myself.
