Hemp stem bedding

Anyone use hemp stem bedding ?

its a lot more expensive that shavings and straw but i bought a few bags and its weird stuff but supposed to absorb a lot more than any other bedding and it rots well.

you mean the likes of hemcore and auboise? yes, i use hemcore. long term, works out a heck of a lot cheaper than shavings. we only use 1 bag per horse per week to top up the beds once laid (with shavings we were usiing 2-3 bags per horse), and only digging out wet patches once a week saves so much time on weekday mornings.

I used it too for a while, loved it :D its just shavings is now included in my livery :)

Thats the stuff, my horse has been trying to eat it though, mind you he would eat himself if he had to.

mine like to nibble the freshly laid hemcore too :rolleyes: it's treated so they *shouldn't* feel the urge to nibble it but they still do! i'm a total convert. skipping out on work mornings is so much eaiser than doing a full muck out, as we did on shavings.

You can make horse bedding out of hemp? Sure wish our government would loosen up and let us grow it. :mad: There's a whole lot of us looking at empty tobacco fields and wondering what to plant next.

Wont they let you grow Miscanthus (elephant grass)?

A friend of mine ships flax core in from the USA and has that for bedding - much like hemp but slightly finer and works great ;)
