View Full Version : GCSE Options, I really cant decide- Again!

ok, ok, you must of seen a few of my career question treads about my options, but I'm in two minds again. I'm sorry if you are all sick of hearing from me!
I think I am offically the worst at making decisions, ever!!
So now I've wrote on paper to my deputy-head what I think I'm taking for my options next year. It's all pretty much 'change one thing if you must' time and most of the lessons on that paper are meant to stay.

I've chosen:
-Geography
-Business Studies
-French
-History

with art as a reserve choice if I dont get a lesson. These lessons should give me a wider varity of job and A-level possiblities.
But I've just re-read another thread on GCSE Pe saying you can do Horseriding in it. I knew this already and I was almost going to take Pe as a GCSE. But I'm not the greatest at sports so I havent chosen it.

My good friend has taken GCSE Pe as she wants to do horseriding (she's been doing it for a year as she is in the year above me) and she says its great and a lot of fun. She's already taped herself riding for her examinations!
The thing is the examinations at my school only count as 10% of your overall GCSE score so my parents say it isnt worth it as the rest is the stuff you do in the lessons. Plus they say it isnt a GCSE in horseriding but a GCSE in PE so by looking at my GCSE's no one would actually know I do horseriding. I just want to ask a few more questions:

Does GCSE sport cover all sports such as rugby, football, gym etc as it does for a normal Pe lesson?
Can you not choose only 4 sports to do in the whole year? (a friend told me I could)
And do you think I should stick with this GCSE options? I know its not the be all end all decision of my future but I'd like to know if these subjects range enough for me to decide later what I want to do with my future?

Thanks again everyone who replies (again) to my GCSE thread.

I'm doing PE for GCSE (I'm in year 10) but I chose it because i like sport and do a lot of it, not necessarily for the horse-riding. If horse-riding is the only reason you're choosing it then i wouldn't, because there's a lot more that you have to do. There's quite a lot of theory work involved which you probably wouldn't enjoy unless you really enjoyed PE. At the begining of the year you choose your favourite sports and you do them, not sure how many but you can also put at the bottom what you don't want to do! For exampe i am NOT doing rugby lol :p If you enjoy sport then do it but i definately wouldn't choose it just for the horse-riding!

i agree with iloveshearer, that if you are thinking of doing PE for the horse riding, i would advise you not to.
I have a couple of friends who took it for GCSE as they are great at sports but also some who didn't know what else to do. I think if you enjoy doing the PE you are doing in year 9 and participate in school teams / clubs you should be fine, but don't rely on the riding to get you through it- it's not worth enough to boost your grade if you don't do as well in the rest of the course (at my school it was 25% PEP, 25% coursework 25% exam and i think thje other 25% was made up of the 2(maybe 4?) sports you choose to do in more depth

Just realised i took 3 of the four options the same as you so if you need help, io may be able to help - i too was unsure what to take so i took all but history (i took drama instead)
I felt history and geog and business were all quite heavy, written subjects so had some fun in drama instead

I chose PE as a GCSE because of the theory. I was rubbish at the practical. do not take PE as a GCSE if you are not good at practical because 60% of the GCSE is practical and only 40% theory.

Thats the thing, I'm wondering if all me options are a bit too heavy. My teacher says I work best sitting down at a desk and writing, but the thing is, I enjoy fun things that dont mean sitting on my butt all day!

Plus I was considering doing Pe because I'm thinking I'll get fat and unhealthy without it! lol! Do you still do Pe anyway if you dont choose it?

Thanks for the replies everyone!

in my school, you do a compulsory pe lesson, whether you take pe or not. so if you take pe, you can do pe nearly every day, either theory or practical. depends if you like sport and learning about the body, to whether you choose it or not.

Yes you still get a compulsory PE lesson even if you don't take PE GCSE. Like the others I'd advise against taking it if you only want to do it for riding.

Hey funkyfilly, it's me again lol:rolleyes:
I'm taking PE atm unless I can be convinced otherwise because I want to balance out my other subjects (taking geography + triple science + french) as they are quite heavy and I enjoy PE. I'm necessarily very good at it but I need something I'm going to have fun doing. I heard that you specialise in 3 sports but I could be wrong. You still do compulsory PE if you don't take it to stay healthy but another reason I'm taking it is because I want to get fitter (will help my riding;) ) and there isn't really any other subjects I want to do.

Cheers everyone!

Lol horses4eva! :D

I dont think I'll be taken Pe now. To be honest, I was only thinking about taking it because I dont want to loose me fittness for horse riding, plus I my mate has taken it and said its great, plus I felt my other subjects are all too heavy to take alltogether. I know you shouldnt be totally influenced by your friends. Plus, Because I've already told the deputy-head that i'll be considering the lessons I told you about before. She said she'd prefer me to not totally change my subject choices. I'm considering doing Art instead of history, but there's another thing I cant decide! :p

I'm probably going to take up swimming again, if I can find a pool for really experienced swimmers like me. (Not getting too big headed here! lol)

Thanks again and any more comments would be great!

ok here goes

GCSE PE
60% practical
40% theory

you only do 4 sports. in my case i did netball (grrrrrrrrrrr) badminton horse riding and ice skating.

Theory is not as bad as it sounds if you are into how things work! its whether you feel its worth doing iot for the horseriding

For ym GCSE choices a while ago i did
Business studies - not the most facinating thing, but excellent for if u ever decide to be self employed etc one day
Geography - as it counts as a science...always good if you decie to go into animals
PE - personal choice as i just HAD to do the riding :D
French - language is very important now days ESPECIALLY as it now isnt coompulsory....employees and unis really loook at this.

Hope itall works out....dw i spent ages deciding what to do for GCSE

Im an old biddy but my daughter is thinking of doing GCSE Pe. Teachers told me last week you had to be GOOD at 4 sports to do well, and you are judged on your ability. If you are not a good sportsman then BTEC sport diploma was a better option.

Can anyone tell me what level of riding is required at GCSE level?

On the side I would advise to pick options you enjoy or are good at, you can specialise later, not many people your age know what career they will end up in!

Okay.. I've filled in my option sheet, and I'm handing it in tomorrow.

i couldnt wait to be rid of PE!!
I did exercising i like, like walking with my Ipod on not running about in stupid shorts with stupid people after a stupid ball - yes ok, i didnt like school!
I took
Geog
French (language college and i wish id done german now)
History (love it!)
Art (exam was cae! got to paint for 2 days straight and no, im rubbish at art! but i still passed cos my annotation was good)
and the triple science thing which was boring but i ended up with an A in it all.

ETA - i set fire to my PE shorts on my last monday of yr 11 (monday = double PE)

Wow! CurlyWurlyRach, you took basically the same as me! I've got art as reserve though.

Nice to know someone took similar ones to me!

PS: lol about the Pe shorts incident! I did the same with my middle schools tie! :p

hate to hijack but.....
what about me? :p
im not the best at sport, but am slightly above average in netball and gymnastics, well above average in trampolining, and would do horse riding. My other option im not sure on yet. . . Got netball, trampolining, riding and something else, possibly gymnastics.
Want to take it as i want to go on to do equine physiotherapy, so need to do humans first, meaning i need to know about muscle systems etc.

You're all so lucky :( I only got 3 options to choose! And because im 'clever' (pfft!) i got put on what they called the Willow pathway where option 3 is already chosen!! I'm definately doing Triple Science, and i chose Art and Geography too.

I really want to be a successful Veterinary Surgeon so do you think i chose the right ones?

x xx

funkyfilly_sos

Colour_Crazy_Gi, I think they are very good options to chose if you want to be anything to do with Medical things.

I wanted to go into animal care but I'm very bad with blood and all that so I dont think it was a good choice! :p

Hopefully the options that I am choosing give me a wide range of jobs to choose from and the chance to specialise when I decide what I actually want to do. *crosses fingers*

UPDATE: I no I definitely cant do PE, havent wrote it on my sheet an theres not really much turning back now. I do have my days where I really want to do GCSE Pe, but I do have my days where I really cant be bothered so my mum said it was a good choice not to take it as I only really excel in Horseriding, swimming and Netball and apparently its for an 'all-round' athlete, which I am not. :p I'm taking up more out of school sports like swimming again and helping out at the Yard will get me fit! (I Hope! :D)

Thanks again and anymore replies are more than welcome! :)
