View Full Version : Good vibes for Loki Please (yes again!)

Hmmm I think I have been here before :D Loki being Loki discovered that I had just cleared all my vets bills and yes shock horror had made plans to enter him in a dressage competition in a few months, so he sat down and hatched a cunning plan ......

Ok so actually he didn't have much influence over this problem :p

EDT came out to him for his 6 monthly check, I wasn't there as not expecting any problems, he has been a little mouthy to ride but nothing drastic, few sharp teeth I thought, but oh no, he has an impacted molar, which is pushing his jaw out of line. The EDT thinks he may need an operation, but I am trying not too panic too much until we know the full extent of the problem.

So a vet is coming tomorrow to x-ray and see where we go from here.

Would be grateful for any positive thoughts for my little man, we managed to find a vet with a mobile x-ray machine and who also is a dentistry specialist, so he is in good hands and I don’t have to worry about traveling him after a sedation, which I was fretting about.

What a little star of a horse to put up with all that going on in his mouth and not complain :o

Sending all the good luck vibes I can possibly send, really hope the news isn't too bad and that it's easily and quickly fixable xx

Oh poor old Loki!

Yes, what a star for being so good when being ridden with all of that.

I have a bit of toothache at the mo and am moaning about chewing on that side of my mouth never mind sticking a metal implement in there.

Good vibes coming to you, Loki and your bank account!!

Thanks guys :)

News isn't great unfortuantly :(

Although on first inspection the twisted tooth looked healthy, the xrays showed "lots going on" the area is severly infected and most likely very painful.

We have been refered to a equine hospital in the New Forest where he will go to have the tooth removed, on the 1st March. Hopefully by extraction through the mouth, but if not they will take it out externally via his jaw {gulp} He will need to stay in horspital for 3 to 5 days if all goes well.

I am really dreading having to leave him surrounded by strangers in a strange place. I will feel like I am abandoning him.

Sorry to hear that your boy's not well.

Max had exactly the same thing done over the summer. They tried to pull his tooth but it shattered, so they went in the side of his face the next day and knocked it out from the top. I was freaking out BIG time over this - like you, I hated leaving him in horspital. He was in for 4 days, came out and was as right as rain. The stitched area was pretty impressive, but was completely healed in 10 days. I was back on him 2 weeks after he came out, and had been lunging for a few days before just to build up a little bit of the muscle he lost under GA and not eating.
You can hardly see the mark that it made - there's just a few white hairs, and he's been absolutely fine since. The biggest problem was keeping the flies off it, but assuming you have it done fairly soon then that won't be an issue.

I hope that he doesn't need the surgery, but if he does then it's not the end of the world. Max's was quite a complicated case - he had a hole right up the middle of it, and so the root was still intact, but there was nothing on the outside to hold on to. Apparently normally they can get them out by extraction.

Loads of positive vibes for the operation.

Which hospital is he going to? My now deceased horse went to the Equine Hospital at Liphook a couple of times and he was looked after really well. If you are able to visit him hopefully he wont feel abandoned.

At least Loki's problems are being sorted and he will be feeling better soon.

I've had similar problems with my own teeth, I am currently wearing braces, so empathise with the poor chap. I wish him a very speedy recovery.

IT'S BALDUR'S REVENGE!

But apart from that, the poor little thing has had so much to put up with recently - big nuzzles and snuffles, to keep him going while it's all sorting out - poor baby. Bless him (and you).

Sending you lots of good vibes, please please let me know how you get on, as our Joe has got to have a tooth out (we think) soon, vet is doing some x rays next week, but its most likely (according to our vet) that its a bad tooth thats been causing the discharge from his nose, which hasn't responded to antibiotics. Fingers crossed for you - I really feel for you, I am DREADING leaving Joe at the hospital - will most likely cry like a big girl and he probably won't bother!!!!!

Oh Clare, aren't horses such trojans, putting up with stuff and not letting on!

I'm sorry you've got all that worry, it must be rough going.

It sounds as though you have the right kind of help in place, though, so I bet it all goes smoothly:)

thinking of you and Loki xxx

Oh Clare, I'll be thinking of you both. Poor old Loki, he has had his fair share hasn't he?

BTW, you are most definitely not abandoning him.:) They're worse than kids for the emotional stuff though aren't they?

Sorry to hear Joe may have to go through the same with his tooth Trewsers. I will definately keep you updated on Loki's progress. I just know I will cry when I have to leave him at the surgery  The tears started when the vet told me he had to go :o Bless he was very sweet about it, probably used to us women worrying about our neds :D

Just looking into transport options, I could take him in our trailer but it is a two hour journey and am wondering if he would be more comfortable in a lorry. I can claim back on my insurance but will have to find about £400 to pay before I claim it back

Hi there - re transport - the trailor is obviously something he's used to, so more calming maybe, but a lorry would definitely be more comfortable.

An important factor for the future - if he normally uses the trailor for "fun" outings, it might be wiser to use a lorry for this distressing trip, otherwise he could in future associate the trailor with pain and isolation.

Also £400 sounds a bit high to me, just based on my local experience - you could get a few more quotes maybe.

Best thoughts to you both . . .

Thanks SF, that price was worked out from their website, so maybe when they return my call they will give me a better quote :o I am waiting on two other companies as well.

I have only travelled him in our trailer once and he was fine but that was only a half hour journey not on the motorway, good thinking about associating the ordeal with whatever he travels in, a suspiction of boxes would be much more cost effective for the future :D

Aw, I'd be the same. It was just what I didn't want to hear when our vet told me it would mean Joe going to hospital - he's such a sensitive soul:o  I am DREADING it but I'm sure he'll be fine, just like yours will be. I've been praying all weekend that it won't come to it, but I just have a feeling it will. Oh dear, I guess it could be worse, at least they'll be better at the end of it all.:) Fingers crossed for you and Loki.

Loki is a very sensitive soul too, we moved yards a few weeks ago, and as long as I was in his sight he was fine, when he couldn't see me he paniced :o May be I should take a sleeping bag :D

I really hope Joe's news is good and he doesn't need the extraction. When are the x-rays due to be done?

Clare-22, we're having the x rays done Wednesday hopefully - when is Loki booked in? Know just what you mean about taking a sleeping bag - when I moved Joe to our new yard last year he was panicked everytime we disappeared - felt as tho I should have slept there with them both (at least he had Storm for company too!). Keep us posted anyways!!

Will be thinking of you both on Wednesday and keeping everything crossed :)

Loki is going in next Thursday, was supposed to get a call from surgeon today, but nothing  I am kinda hoping they will bring it forward, as vet that x-rayed thought he would need to go straight in, and he didn't leave any antibiotics or pain killers. Will give him until tomorrow and then will chase.

Thanks SF :)

We are all set for Loki to go into horspital on Thursday. Managed to find a transporter to transport him which was a huge relief as it looked like we were going to have to take him in the trailer, and having driven the route today it is a fair way :o

Spoke to the surgeon and he is confident that as long as the tooth comes out via the mouth then he can come home Friday, no box rest needed and should be fine to be ridden after two weeks off.

So keeping everything crossed it is that straight forward! Although with Loki I have my doubts

The vet said not to panic he may not call me with an update until late Thursday.

Thanks LD. Everything is just a bit much at the moment, yesterday my old dog managed to get himself munched on by a German Shepherd, so I spent yesterday afternoon in the emergency vet listening to him scream whilst they stapled his holes up :(

I hope things don't happen in threes
