Can anyone help me? ive just had my first jumping lesson over small crossed poles - nearly fell off every time! My instructor says to sit up earlier but when? it all seems to happen so quick...all abit of a blur now and I'm losing confidence..

Makes us take our stirrup length up a couple notches when going into jumping position. We also do lots of flat work in jumping position (including without stirrups) before we ever go over cross poles. I would speak to your instructor about doing trotting poles and other flat work before jumping again if you really feel your confidence has suffered after your last lesson.

Unless you're jumping pretty high, you don't need to raise your stirrups. I jump 3' up to 3'6", and I don't put my stirrups up at all.

I've only ever had 2 jumping lessons and did about a foot. I took my stirrups up 2 holes then to get a better hovering position.

I haven't jumped a lot and not very high but we were also told to always put our stirrups up 2 holes, or whatever was comfortable, to enable a better jumping position....

maybe you should take your sturrips up some holes and hold some of your horses mane if your horse doesnt have a mane ask for a neck stap ( a long stirrup leather would be ok) and put it around your horses neck i hope this helps

it seems as if your instructor is taking things a bit fast for you. did he/she take you through the 5 stages of a jump and explain exactly what you were supposed to do? when i'm teaching people to jump, i spend a lot of time on the jumping position and riding in it at walk and trot, and going over trotting poles init before we get near a jump. we also do a few cross poles that are small enough that the horse just trots over them. don't be worried about telling your instructor you aren't happy about what you're doing, and getting him/her to go back a step if needed.

there is clear round jumping at our stable next thursday, my instructor wants me to do it! but I haven't been jumping that long and then only very little jumps, so I'm obviously not gonna win but it might be fun to take part...what do u think??:p

I think that you should go for it muzzy! If you think that you can cope you should just enjoy the experience - even if you don't win! Have fun!

:D ;) :) :p
