My friends pony is curently being over enthusiastically groomed by his field mate - he does try to fend him off by bucking and kicking out but gives in as his field mate wont leave him alown. The grooming has caused hair loss mainly on one hind quater (about 6" by 4" ) the other side is now catching up. Initialy his owner though he was itchy so as treated him for mites, lice used soothing cream to reduce any itchyness but the grooming continues (poor boy is pounced on as soon as the other horse is in the field). His rugs are now badly damaged because of the grooming. The simple sloution would be to seperate them but the other owner does not want that to happen as far as she is concerned they both "love" each other and her horse would be on his own:mad: .
Is there anything that could be put on him to deter the grooming but wont iritate his skin or something that can go on his rugs. Is there a magic cream to help the hair grow back - looks horrid at the moment unsure how much is going to grow back.
Just for info he is a new forest with a thick coat , has a neck anf bib clip only out in light weight rugs as he get so hot in anything heavier except when very cold when he has a medium weight on.
Thanks lots and lots:)

hmmmm a very difficult position to be in as it is only natural that horses groom each other. But your pony is now very sore and bald because of it. Could you not just split them up but dont put the rope too high so they can interact over the tape if they wont. Then if your boy has had enough he has still got the option of walking away.

Udder Cream is good for hair growth apparently...

I'm afraid this would cut no ice with me, I would want them separated. Could you not divide the turnout with electric fencing? Most horses will settle quite happily with another beast 'in view', they don't have to share a field.

Thanks for the advice - I will pass it on:) . My friend will have to stand her ground over splitting them up - have offered her some of Mr D's field so am hoping she will take up the offer (Darcy does not do grooming - so sprinter and his rugs will be safe!).
Thanks again

You could try spraying the pony with something like NAF No Bite. It is designed to be sprayed on rugs and bandages to stop the horse chewing them. It is similar to the stuff people paint on childrens nails to stop them biting them. It tastes disgusting.

It will be fine on unbroken skin. It could be just what is needed to get the other horse out of the habbit. I use it on my ponies tails to stop the sheep eating them!
