just thought id give a quick update on my mare who ive posted about who has breathing problems. its nice to know people care (thanks for the pm novicnic re the update:) )will try not to bore you with the details but....
after coming back from the vet college she seem much better for a couple of weeks but then she started coughing again. i call them and they now want her to go back and be put on a tread mill so they can scope her whilst she is cantering on it...fine not a problem......however
on wednesday i went to catch her in and she was down it the field colicing:eek: - vet came and did an internal to find she had an impaction:eek: . they did the normal tube into the stomach and liquid parafin pump along with pain killers
thursday - no improvement vet comes again - tubes her again more pain killer.
today still colicing - vet comes again and tubes her again - does internal and she is still impacted. we are now basically waiting to see what happens. im checking her every few hours during the night and the only thing she can eat is bran mash. i have to lunge her regularly to try and help things along:rolleyes:
basically if it does not move soon she will have to go to the vet college and possibly have surgery. i feel like i should rent a box there;) (not at £25 a day that is not covered by insurance:D )
dont know if its connected to the breathing thing or not. i just feel so bad for her
anyone else had a horse that has been impacted 3 days or more? what happened?

I'm so sorry to hear she's having more problems. What a tough time you're going through.
Have had a nose in my horsey books.
It says impaction colic can be caused by cold weather - when they generally drink less water.
Another factor was lack of exercise - if stabled continously in past 2 weeks. The inactivity is thought to lead to slower intestinal movements.
Also the amount of fibre in their diet - the less roughage, the slower the manure moves, and the drier it'll be (more water absorbed from it). Some drugs can also effect how fast the bowels move.
Can't find anythiing else re treatment beyond what you know - drugs, tubing then possible surgery. It implied impaction can't be left for more than 7-10 days or the bowel wall may be damaged. Hence why they're considering surgery soon, I guess.
We're thinking of you and your poor mare - do keep us updated when you have a mo.

my boy had impacted colic this time last year . just trying to remember if it went on longer than three days ...i think it passed on the third day though he was tubed four timesduring those thress days.He was fine but he did loose alot of weight. His was caused by his lack of teeth he couldnt really chew his hay properly so it was clogging him up.Alot of people at the yard thought he should of gone to the vets but the vet wanted to keep him at the yard as hes 22 and she didnt want to upset him by moving him around .(though we did have a lorry on standby )dont really have any advice hope shes better soon!!

just thought i would update that my girlie is doing much better - impaction seems to be moving and she went out in the field for half an hour today:D
shes still on pain killers and only eating bran mash but seems to be going well. going to give her hay in the morning so if shes ok with that we should be ok.
now i just have to get her fit enough to canter for 4 mins on the tread mill when she goes back to the vet college - i just have to stop every time she coughs (which is every couple of minutes) so should be interesting.
