She's been letting me mount with no-one holding her for a week or so now, (again thanks to KateWooten) unfortunately yesterday we had some minor objections but she quickly stopped when another livery came over to hold her.

I schooled her for 45 minutes and it went so well that I thought I'd go for a walk up the lane and back - I haven't hacked by myself for over a year and haven't willingly ridden outside the school for about that time too, I've had some right wibbly moments about hacking.

I was ready to ride out by myself but 2 other liveries who've just moved into the village said they'd walk up the road with me so we all set off together, them on foot going home. Quite a few cars passed in both directions (single track lane) and Ziz and I were fine. They went off to their house and I set off up another lane, which goes along the top of the yard's fields. I set a goal of walking to a telegraph pole but actually we went past it, we also went past the very scary cows in the field with no problems.

We then turned round and pootled back home. Helicopters going overhead, scary cows now to the right of us, and ohmygod horse eating snowdrops. On the way back down the hill a horse in one of the fields came running up and spooked her too, then she saw those really scary snowdrops and spooked again. This is the hill that she tanked off down it last time we rode out, with one other horse. The best bit is that I stayed relaxed, I did feel a bit sick leaving the school but then just felt calm and relaxed, even when she spooked. I was actually riding her properly outside the school, telling her she was being silly and riding her on - her spooks got less - she expects me to be nervous and as I wasn't we were both better.

This has been so long in coming, I have waited since cracking my ribs 2 years ago to feel like this hacking on her, the sense of calm was amazing. I know this is only a first step, I mean we only walked but it's a massive first step and I'm over the bloody moon. :D :D

She seemed to enjoy it too, ears pricked, lovely striding walk out, she even groomed me before walking off in the field. I turned her out naked and she didn't even roll - think she was rewarding me, lol.

So one very happy Amanda here, Ziz and I will actually get out this summer, instead of me beating myself up over not being able to get out of the yard gates. I'm going to start with schooling a bit and then walking out, I love having a day off in the week in my current temping role as it means I can do this again midweek, roll on the lighter nights. I'm beginning to feel like myself riding again. :D

Thanks all, I'm still buzzing from it, I will definitely be out again on Wednesday, was assuming I could go today but OH went "What you're riding again ?" as I was leaving the house, we've recently negotiated a 1 day of the weekend for me, 1 day for us deal - I do ride most nights after work as well ;) so I humoured him, roll on the light nights.

Hi Amanda, I think I missed the original posts about your difficulties mounting and read them with interest when I saw this thread. I am SO pleased for you! great advice from Kate and also great interpretation from you as it was only reading your responses along with Kate's advice that I really saw how it would work.

All this groundwork has obviously made you far more confident with her and allowed you to keep calm. A calm bottom can also mean a calm pony! well done you (god, snowdrops can be scarey can't they?)

I am looking forward to hearing your updates and your new found joy of hacking out! well done you!

Having the tools to move her towards me has definitely helped, along with the games we've been playing, finishing the feelings of helplessness but we've spent most of last year walking in hand which has also helped our bond. It's been a combination of things, trekking on Icelandics for a day; all these in hand walks; having a fantastic RI who's been really helpful, pushing me to do what she believes I can; having a friend ride her out on a hack with me walking beside and said friend being very complimentary on my horse and then telling me that Ziz is expecting a nervous reaction from her rider made me feel ashamed; and oddly looking after 2 other horses for another livery at your yard made me realise how wonderful she is :D .

What a lovely post, Amanda.:D I filled up when reading it. I'm thrilled for you.:D As someone who has lost her confidence, and eventually got it back, I completely understand what you've been through and just how fantastic it is when you get back there again. Both Ziz and you were a couple of stars.:D :D

I am aren't I :p ;) , I should be incredibly stressed as I'm not earning enough pennies at the moment to survive having left a job that was making me miserable before Christmas (great timing, eh !!) but am setting up my own business, feel like I'm taking control of a lot of aspects of my life, temping to bring in some cash and everything just seems to be falling into place (apart from OH but that's a whole 'nother story :D ).

Had a playing session with Ziz last night, she positively rushes over to touch the mounting blocks now and seemed to really enjoy herself. Will be riding tonight and hacking tomorrow (day off temping job).

Hello Amanda

I don't know your full story re the cracked ribs etc - which sounds awful. No wonder you lost confidence, but how fantastic to read your post about going for a hack again and enjoying it!

It must have given you a real lift.

Thanks greymane, basically and as concisely as I can, my mare bolted in the school in response to a car backfiring (it sounded like a cannon, was an old RR), I came off and landed on the fence post surrounding the school. A bit OWW moment !!

Today's update : schooling went even better, although she's still pratting about upon mounting, it's now changed though and appears to be a resistance to actually working (I had a lot of headshaking - side to side - from her as well as I was making her work properly and she was trying everything to get me to stop), schooled for 3/4 hour including lots of canter laps and 20m circles, which will please my RI as she's been bellowing at me about doing them properly for weeks now and we did today. Managed to open the school gate, despite a very badly positioned mounting block right in front of the gate, walked out of the school and out of the yard - by myself :D :D .

We didn't walk far, but went past a gate she always jumps sideways at, past 2 very scary trees moving in the wind and met 4 cars, 3 of them coming from behind us. Once we'd got one tree further than the the one I'd originally wanted to ride to (pushing myself a little bit), we turned round and pootled back. The hill back to the yard in this direction is always horrible for me because she always jogs down it - not today, a lovely walk down, we walked past the gate and up the other hill away from the yard, she was calm and wasn't napping to the gate so I turned around again and took her home.

After she'd been cooled down and had had a little bit of breakfast I turned her out naked, so no doubt will have a black ponio when I go down shortly with dog to bring her in.

I got out of the gate and up the road by myself :D :D :D
