... a horse or pony back then (in my case 30 years ago) how far does it differ from the horse or pony you actually have now?
My dream was of riding a black stallion, with an unfeasibly long mane along a white sandy beach........ you get the picture!
All the psychologists etc say that horses are a substitute for men - but I have read that really men, children etc are a substitute for a horse !

Champion the Wonder Horse basically !! followed by a palomino advertising the first WH Smith Win a Horse (or Yacht :p ) competition I remember, followed by every pony and horse I rode !!
Then every horse I read about, Flicka, Thunder, the Black Stallion, you name it they were mine.:D
I have a grey mare, ID/Conn but she's incredibly intelligent so could obviously have been a tv star ;).
I was also madly in love with Milton and Desert Orchid so not that far from the reality.

When I was really young my dream was to own a bay gelding with a big star and four socks :p
After that it changed from an Arabian stallion to a heavy draft horse. hehe.
One of my biggest "crushes" though was chestnuts, and funnily enough I've just paid a deposit on a chestnut Selle Francais gelding.

I wanted a pony - any kind, but failing that, any horse would do (just not too big, big is scary :o ).
I got a 4yo TB, 14.2hh, who then proceeded to grow two inches and become a horse (sigh). Love her to bits though!
Then, on top of that, I got my pony (13.2hh NF), but I still prefer my TB. My boyfriend and the pony get on like a house on fire though, so it all worked out quite well!

I wanted a beautiful, muscled stallion - a bit like the Lloyds Bank advert - although I dreamed it in the 1960's and the advert wasn't around then.
I got a beautiful gelding called William. A Dutch Warmblood who holds his tail up like an Arab when he really runs......... beautiful in my eyes!

I wanted a 16.2 chestnut warmbloodxTB mare to compete at SJ and eventing. Must be sensitive and forward going and friendly and inquisitive.
Instead I have a old lazy standardbred gelding who is phobic about jumping and can't canter
A fat cob who is admittedly my kind of ride (sensitve and forward going ) but never going to go to olympia (she is otherwise perfect though and I wouldn't change her for the world)
And a huge gangly baby who falls over her own feet and has no idea how to jump
Typical

I dreamed of owning a grey (white) Connemara Pony when I was 8. Even then I was kind fo a researcher and being a pretty tall kid I figured I should have one of the taller ponies. (I haven't looked at Connemara ponies in about 27 years so if Connemaras are actually short, then my research must have been faulty back then. ;) )
Back then I lived in Germany though and Connemaras were a possibility. I now live in Texas and haven't even seen a C. advertised EVER.
My first horse (at age 30) is a bay Thoroughbred, second horse is a chestnut Quarter Horse and third horse is a Buckskin Draft cross. I guess the last one look kind of like the grey pony of my dreams (in an almost 16 hands kind of way...)

Had 2 dreams actually.... when I was a wee little one... I dreamt of a white horse, long flowing mane..... when one day, my father came home with a grey-ish horse for the farm... by no means was he sparkling and shiny, more so an older gelding, who needed grooming..... but at age 5, he was THE WHITE HORSE! MY HORSE!
My 2nd dream was having a Paint horse.... watching westerns and seeing American Indians riding them with such majesty and freedom.. it was the icon of the west!
Last April, I found myself, not one but TWO beautiful Paints for my my daughter and I! They are our best buddies! Each is actually sort of an extension of our own personalities.. her paint is quite timid and shy... mine is a bolshy one! HA! What more can I ask for??? A horse who is JUST LIKE ME! :p

thanks to years of reading the Ginny books, i had a passion for chestnut arab mares! couldn't believe my luck when the parents dragged us to see a chestnut arab mare! i wanted that pony more than anything ever before. But she'd a suspected bad back (RI picked up on it). So we ended up with a dinkum bay welsh cob.
I was very saddened to be told only 2 years after getting bonnie that the arab we had tried died of liver failure :( but bonnie started my passion for welsh cobs, and kestral is continuing it.

When I was young my friend and I used to canter around the garden jumping on our pretend horses (I think I kept doing it even when I did have a pony:o ), But mine was a big 17.2 black stallion called samson, who could jump really well.
I then wanted a chestnut tb gelding called bobby, and I have ended up with 2 chestnut tb mares, and a small black welsh mare. I have a large black dog called sam tho, lol.

The horse in my head was a chestnut Arab stallion
First pony was a small hairy skewbald mare who was a nightmare lazy and incredibly spooky. Had 2 paces slow plod and violent shy into traffic.
Second pony part arab chestnut mare (other half welsh x thoroughbred) and she was fab.
How share a grey Selle Francais and am now a big fan of that breed however still like chestnuts (grey's a bit high maintenance.). Mushy I'm jealous of your new horse without even seeing it.

My love affair with horse started before I can even remember. My parents said that when I was 3, I had a place picked out in our tiny back yard of around 1/8th of an acre the spot where Daddy was going to build the barn for my horse.
I grew up exposed to Tennessee Walking horses. My older cousin (Mom's side of the family) had one that she showed and my uncle (Dad's side) lived on a big farm and raised them and my cousin on that side of the family rode all over the farm on her horse, so twice a month, when we would go for a visit to one family or the other, for as long as I can remember, I was around horses to some degree. My cousin had all of her ribbons pinned up to her bulletin board in her room and on the farm, I barely remember my uncle holding me up to pet the nose of one of their horses. I've been smitten all of my life.
At 5, my mom picked up my little purse one day and it was packed full of coins that I was scrapping off my parent's dresser where my dad emptied his pockets at night. She asked me why, I said I was saving up for a horse (never a pony). By the time I was 13, I had saved up enough from allowance, mowing neighbor's lawns, and baby sitting to buy my own horse.
We boarded him at a really nice stables of a lady that my mom knew and I took english riding lessons. I never thought about a TWH again. I've ridden some western in speed events (barrel racing and pole bending) and showed other people's gaited horses, but everything I've ever owned eventually was turned into a jumper whether they started there or not.
I've always wanted a bay and we finally got her in Indy. My others have been a Tibino paint gelding (Cochise), a chestnut large pony mare (Penny) that could jump out of her skin, a sorrel QH mare that I got as a yearling (Misty), and my Beamer, a red roan gelding QH warmblood.

I can’t recall wishing for any specific breed... I think as long as it was a horse... the colour and breed didn’t mean much to me!!! (actually I’m lying... there were a couple “My little ponies” that I would of loved to own... in enlarged size... but the blue & red manes & tails... made it kind of hard to find!!! :D hehehe )
Now I own two ponies, one brown they other white... ;)

Well when I got back into horses after a 10 year gap in my teens/twenties I always know one day, come hell or high water, I would eventually buy my own :)
I even picked a name for my 'dream' horse, she was going to be called Mimosa and would be a grey arab.
I ended up with a coloured cob X who was already called Mimi (and although the my horse's breed is completely different from what I envisaged, the name is quote close :p)

My dream horse, when I was a child was Caroline Bradleys, Tigre. (Just did a search for a pic on the net, but couldn't find anything :(). Anyway, he was a famous showjumper. Must have been in the 70's (:o ). He was like a perfect white unicorn, without the horn... A few years later, my parents bought me my first pony, and he was an identical little mini version:) . And I kept him pure white, just like Tigre!
After I grew up, I always dreamed of having a palomino arab X, so after my first pony died (after 22 years), I went on a mission to find my new dream horse, and here he is

The very first book I ever read as a child was "The Black Stallion" so naturally that's what I wanted. Then I met the neighbor's shetland mare - well, she was black and had a lot of mane, so close enough!:D I loved that pony and she was a saint to take care of me. In fact, part of why I fell in love with Brammie - in my avatar, also black - is that he reminded me a lot of her, only taller.
But I bet every red-blooded American girl who grew up watching Bonanza wanted Little Joe's paint - especially if Little Joe came with it.:p

WhenI was a kid I WAS National Velvet! So I waited for king. Actually befor e I even went to school we had a shetland called DannyNow I look back that poor pony was so tolerant. If I was a kid these days I.m sure they would say I was hypoactive or something and have me on sedatives but back then I was just put out in the back yard (1 1/2 acres) with the older siblings and the pony. I used to have this blue tu tu ballet dress and I even have a photo of me standing on the pony while he walked round whilst I was doing ballet. My poor mother its a wonder she didn't turn into an alcoholic or something. WhenI was a bit older (8 maybe) I had the cutest little Pinto pony. I used to live on the shed roof which I jumped off quite regularly but no I never took off in flight My mum used to even hand me my tea (evening meal ) up there on a mild night. I could slide down the honeysuckle at the side of the roof and land on the pony. When I was 14 I was given this amazing 17.2 HH thoroughbred who was fast, could jump magnificently and who was sooooo bombproof. That's why I never new that thoroughbreds are different because mine was so quiet and even temperament. I used to ride him down one of the busiest roads in the city of where I lived and He never shied. At that stage of my life if I had been guided forth into showjumping my whole life would have been different than it were for the last 30 years. A real crossroads. Nevermind I.m back with horses now. Although no longer thoses nerves of steel. And the one thing I found about this young silly-cute thoroughbred (Mr delicate) I have now is that he brought so many enjoyable memories back when I ride him. Although he's fizzy I'm never worried on him just a clamness from the past. You watch I'll probably fall off next week! :p Kindest Regards Oldbushy

Fantastic, all of you :)
The horse of my childhood dreams will not be the one I end up with in adulthood of course, but I have fond memories of something that kept me going in childhood days with a non horsy family.
I was really only thinking about this as my OH has very tentatively conceeded that we might get one for me. Although the reality of owning a horse with three kids, a job and elderly parents to look after might be a juggling act too far!
Coupled with the fact that I have never owned a horse and am classed as a novice rider too, after so many years away from being around them - I may be commiting a cardinal sin in the eyes of some forum members!!

Go for it Greymane. At our age it doesn't do to postpone the things we really want in life. What with parents and kids, you need a space for you in the middle.
I already ride my dream horse. Which is why I don't buy one.

One of the first horses I ever rode was a big grey that went by the name of Seagull. It belonged to a local girl who gave me my first ever proper riding lesson for the pricely sum of 2 shillings (god I am ancient!!!)
I remember my Dad being worried because she never had a saddle on him and I would be riding 'bareback' (He was huge and there was no way I was going anywhere once on him, like a great big sofa). I was about 7 at the time and remember that my Mum, Dad and Nan had all chipped in to pay the 2 shillings for me:)
To me he was 'a huge white magnificent stallion' and the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. The lesson was a hugh success and I had quite a few with him over a period of time. He was probably some sort of cob in reality, but even now when I think about him he still seems in 'my mind' to have been magnificent and I really cannot view him 'in reality' at all:)

I also found the horse of my dreams (dancer/candy) except she was 15.2hh, which by this time was a better size, she was for sale but at a ripoff price and I cant buy anyway :(:(:(
I rode her once - she was on loan to the RS - she was perfect in every single way but she bucked my mate off into the school wall so was sent back to the dealer who owned her and I think she has now been sold :(:(:(

The first pony I rode, Ginger, seemed to me like a magnificent chestnut stallion, though in reality he has only a little thing, and looking at photos he was more dun, but the name influenced my memories ;)
It did mean that when I hit 10 my dream horse was a big elegant 16hh chestnut, then the horse obsession waned a bit, I rode, but I didn't fill my mind with thoughts of horses between weekly lessons like I once had.
Now I've suddenly hit the horse obsessive stage again at 18 and I can't shake the desire to get a horse that I can call my own, I've learnt that size, colour etc doesn't matter. Though my love for the slightly cheeky and whizzier horses is still firmly intact (in fact, it was re-affirmed by riding a part arab a little while ago).
I just want a horse! :(

When I was 12 i saw Llanarth Flying Comet at HOYS black welsh D stallion and wanted a foal by him but they were 1000 back then so dad said no  20 years later I achieved my dream of a welsh cob but not black and not related to him then 5 years ago bought a part bred grey mare who is his great grand-daughter was very chuffed but not as pleased as when in May Lidgett Black Orchid came our way she is his grand-daughter and is black with a white star so 33 years later finally achieved my dream and have two beautiful welsh cobs. I always wanted a 17-hand dapple-grey Irish hunter.
Until one day, in my early 30s, when I was grooming a 16-something-hand dapple-grey hunter (TB?). I realized that if I needed a step stool to groom his top half, I would need a step ladder if I wanted to go trail riding on my dream Irish hunter. That day I started wanting a Hobbit pony, something along the lines of Bill or maybe Fatty Lumpkin.
A few years ago I started wanting a cob, something between 13.2 and 14.2, with lots of feather.
Until I started riding again year-round and learned about MUD.
Now I'm riding a QH. No feather, dapples only in summer sunlight, coat the same color as the mud here. I don't know if I'm the rider he dreamed of in his youth, but he seems to love me, and I wouldn't take all the hunters or cobs in the world for him! :)

In reality I have owned a 13.2 blue roan JA pony, had a 15.2 piebald vanner mare on loan, my lovely old chesnut mare Stella and for 12 months I owned Kaspartsje the Friesian baby, who has since gone on to a fabulous new home where he can be left entire and hopefully become a GP dressage horse.
Another Friesian is my dream - so its lovely to see PengaPenga's gorgeous boy.

i wanted a jet black mare, a jet black stallion and a chestnut gelding called Chestnut Wonder (CHessie for short!)
i now have a jet black mare. she is what i always imagined I wanted, although 16.2hh rather than 18hh! (hence why I bought her despite her crap feet!)
i used to sit with the robinsons catalogue and add up how much it would cost to buy all the stuff i wanted. when I got my first horse i bought it all (well cheap imitations!) most of it was what Sarah had in International Velvet (sad I know!) and my first horse looked like arizona pie (although much older and a darker bay!)
i also wrote into H&P once as I couldn't function properly due to my need to have a pony of my own! I got SOOOO jealous with the owners pages - especially kiddies with their own ponies. had to cry myself to sleep at night!!!!!
geez, i'm really sad.
as for horses being a substitute for men & kids.... reminded me again why i've left my husband 400 miles away and just had to find the perfect home for my gorgeous black mare!!!!! (incidently, mum/dad can you babysit while I go riding!!!!) ha ha ha ha ha!!

I either had a black stallion, called Storm/Thunder or a white (yes, I was young, so it was white, not grey lol) mare clled Snow Storm. I was sooo original with the names lol.
14 years later (I'm 22 now) I have my handsome boy who is a gelding (easier to control than the stallion, but sorta the same) and grey (so almost the white hrose lol). Sorta gotta cross.
Wouldn't have him any other way though.

I was sooooooo desperate for my own pony that I wouldn't have been in the least bit fussy, any colour, shape or size would have done - i'd even have been happy with a donkey!
My dream horse however would have been a fleabitten grey Arab :)
30 years on my dream came true and was in the shape of a skewbald cob X!!

When I was a little girl I dreamed of having Jinny's horse Shantih from the book. I dreamed of nothing else. I used to cover my school books in shantih drawings.
When I met Jasmine she was my dream pony, she looked just like Shantih although she wasn't pure bred. I even found out the cover horse that I used to stare at and love so much was Jasmines cousin!!!!
I now have my pure bred chestnut Arab mare and I have called her Shantih!!
