i am serioulsy worrying about my horse atm! she is a 15.1 appaloosa x 12 yrs old ... she has never had laminitis before, ive had her for 5 years. Howver, she has had a year off because of a leg injury and she is rather fat at the moment .. i have just started bringing her back into work and altho she seems fit enough i dont want to push her to loose her weight before all the spring grass arrives! how likely is she to get laminitis and what are the symptoms? thanks :)

I can't tell you how likely she is to get it but the signs are a raised radial pulse, heat in the hoof wall and shifting her weight so that she stands with her weight on her heals. Hope this helps :)

a bounding digital pulse, reluctance to walk, that 'leaning back' stance to take the weight off the front feet, a raised heart and breathing rate, 'hot' feet. But often, by the time symptoms show themselves it's too late.

Often an early symptom can be stiffness in the shoulders. Reduce grazing if you are worried.

Sometimes you'll get warning signs like horse being slightly footy, slightly raised pulses occasionally, feet flaring for no good reason before you get to laminitis bad enough for pounding pulses and rocking back. If you keep an eye out for those warnings and do something about them it might let you keep things from getting to the point where it's a full bad bout of laminitis.
