It was my birthday earlier in the week and my thoughtful other half bought me the Heather Moffett (corrected dont know what I was thinking there) book Enlightened Equitation which I have had my head buried in ever since. Its a great read and makes a lot of sense to me as someone who wants to do the best for her horsie:)

I would like opinions on Heathers suggestion that a Pelham bit with double reins is the preferred way to go to obtain the best from your horse. Sam is currently ridden in a Waterford Hanging Cheek Snaffle, however he is still incredibly strong when jumping, although we have much more control and impulsion now rather than mummy being dragged to the jump (I actually pulled a muscle in my arm jumping him once when he galloped into the jump unexpectedly and jerked me out of the saddle:o ) I still feel that sometimes I am having to use a little bit more pull on the reins than I would like and Heathers suggestion that less force with a Pelham is preferrable to more force with a snaffle has got me thinking.

Opinions please:)

Hiya :)

You're probably best asking the lady herself on her forums (enlightenedequitation.com) :)

She has written an article on the pelham HERE (http://www.enlightenedequitation.com/public/library_pelham_use.html). She talks about her experience with using the pelham and also why she doesn't feel that the snaffle is the be all and end all :)

It's an interesting article, have a look at it :)

I ride my mare in a KK Ultra which she goes well in but she does also go nicely in a pelham (always with double reins).

Her book is great, isn't it? I'm hoping to do one of her equisimulator courses when I'm back on my feet. She's reduced the price to £200 now which is great :)

I'm a great fan of pelham bits - used correctly, with two reins and a light touch. But as with everything else to do with horses, it all depends on what your horse likes and goes best in.

By the way, I think you've married Heather MOFFETT to Paul McCartney, by calling her Heather MILLS! :D :D

Don't you mean Moffatt?

Heather Mills is trying to get a load of money off Paul McCartney:D

Oh dear - I think I just wet myself from laughing so hard at my mistake! There was a TV thing about Paul mcCartney on as I was typing that, must have subliminally picked up her name. How positively embarrassing :D

I have fixed it now - thanks for your replies guys :)

Haha :D.

You know its funny, i'd always thought the pelham as one to avoid, but actually i dont find it that bad. Why is it that so many horses go much better in the pelham than a snaffle? Answer me that one .
