When my horse rears i lean forwards (like jumping position) - unless she stands up and starts staggering about on 2 legs when i put my arms round her neck to stay on, give her rein and grab my martingale neckstrap for the jolt when she lands, then i tun her head so she cant go up again.
Its important not to lean back/pull the reins as you can pull the horse down ontop of you like i did once - not pretty.

It's only dangerous, if the horse falls over backwards and lands on you. No horse a beginner rides on should do that. But if, lean forward and leave the reins loose as the others say. If the horse rears up very high and it feels unstable, jump off to the side. If you are in any doubt and you are not sure what's happening, jump off as far to the side as possible and let the reins go, you might fall or twist your ankle or whatever, but at least the horse won't land on you.

Mayos done it before when hes spooked and I just leant forward and hold on. If a horse has rearing it normally has some physical or mental problem that needs to be sorted out before ever riding or like Mayo hes spooked and it was only a tiny rear, his feet only just came off the ground:p . It doesn't happen otherwise!!;)
