I have been feeding Pride speedi-beet just to keep his weight on (he looses it quite easily in winter) but it's making him a bit hyper and 'on edge'. This week he's managed to break my dads toes when he spooked and tried to run  nearly dislocate his arm and jump around on the roads...
He's only been on the speedi-beet about 2 weeks but it's giving him too much energy!!

What can i feed to keep his weight on, but that wont make him hyper?

He has happy hoof, general supplement and garlic plus the speedi beet at the moment.

has anything else changed? The reason I ask is that I have been feeding my two Speedi beet for the last two winters for the exact same reason as you and have never seen any changes like that in them.

In your case it might well be the Speedi beet but I know loads of people who swear by it and it makes such an improvement to the condition of mine that maybe its worth a look to see if could be anything else?

Nothing else has changed

He was fed speedi-beet last winter too, but the same thing happened so i took him off it. I thought i'd try again just in case it wasnt the speedi-beet before but it's just giving him LOADS of energy!

Why not try 'normal' sugar beet?

my horse that fizzes up on speedi beet is fine on sugar beet shreds or pellets which is strange since it is molassed but hey ho - you can't figure 'em all out

I'm with Helenc. I feed regular beet pellets that you soak in water. I feed it with no problems at all. No whacked out horses on it at all. If I feed straight alfalfa, then I get whacked out horses, that I can't control.

What about adding oil to the diet? puts condition on but without the fizz.:)

Sure you know this and that it's already happening, but 24/7 ad lib hay is always my first port of call for weight gain before trying any additional feed:)

Strange that speedibeet's hyping him up - they can be funny things:rolleyes: :)

Speedi Beet does the same to mine, so he's on Fibre Beet now, from the same makers...

It makes Bim fizzy too, not uncontrollbly tho - shes on it at the mo, would be interested in alternatives tho, although she has had lami so may be limited.

Happy Hoof is rocket fuel! It may be recommended by the Poorly Pony Hoof Anorak Asscociation or whatever but it is something bonkers like 17% sugar (check out the info on the bag) I have seen elderly lamanitic ponies grow 2 hands and take off like Silver on the stuff.
As to original quest, grass nuts could be a good alternative.

Some horses seem to react badly to the beet pulp (not the mollases). Yorkie is a witch if she even gets a sniff of beet pulp.

Have a look at Fibre beet and Alfa-Beet. They contain half sugar beet but might be a bit better.

Or have a look at Alfa-Oil and feed it just soaked with water. I would get rid of the Happy Hoof (horrible stuff) and replace it with just Alfa-Oil and the supplement.

Alpha Beet kai wouldn't touch for some reason even though he eats alpha a

I would add oil to the feed or water down the speedibeet/kwikibeet. Make it really sloppy.

if ithe beet is for taste, a carton of apple juice or pineapple juice in a bucket of water works well too!!!!

Pinks lady, I would be very interested to hear about happy hoof. My ponies a lammi, and spring time through to winter, hes on happy hoof. I cant rate it, because I havent really thought about it....

I am thinking down the lines of top spec anti lam....why do I bother?? I wont even have him in the summer...:o

But, still wants the best for him. Thanks....sorry to hijack thread,PL if you get this feel free to PM me.

Anyway, anser to topic, mine are find and dandy on speedy beat, but then they are not the fizzy type. Reggie is a little "im a little full of myself" but hes always like that. I find it really good.

I think everything gets put on feed, but what about the wind and spookiness, that we cant even hear or see but they can? I think its good stuff, you could change if he broke your dads toes though!!

Sorry, quick question: is Alfa-beet safe for ponies who have had laminitis in the past? I got a free sample with Your Horse this month. It's gotta be better for her than molassed sugar beet nuts hasn't it?

Hi there, for laminitics you can still feed the ordinary sugar beet prviding you use plenty of water to soak and rinse all the molasses off before use. Speedi-beet is sugar free anyway so the easiest option.
I know a lot of people are having success with adding a mug of black sunflower seeds to feed for condition, quite cheap too, you could also try linseed.
