My pony has had a tendon injury in on of his back legs and has been off work for 3 months. The vet gave me the all clear to ride again about 2 months ago and i have been starting to build him up again. Is there any chance he will jump again maybe 6-12 months down the line??? Or will i not be able to jumps at all??

more than likey he will be jumping again as long as you give his tendon time to heel

my old horse, ripped apart of his tendon and basically it has to be pieced back together, He had a year off then a year out hacking then i started schooling him. I'm not really a jumper anymore but he was able to jump.... he loved it! :D He had some of the top vets look at his leg, before i had him he was owned by a showjumper. The vet said that his leg would never hold up under heavy competition, so BSJA two to three times a week was out.

It just takes time and patience.

Hope he feels better soon

hi, sorry to hear about your pony. how did the injury happen i.e. did it happen when you were jumping. do you use tendon boots?

i couldnt really say as i don't know how bad the injury is so i think your best bet is asking your vet. have they seen your pony ridden since his injury?

good luck:)

If you give it enough time. Depending on the severity of the injury, tendons take a lot longer than bones to mend, it can be up to 24 months! Your boy may always have a thickening as the tendon tissue is never the same as the original stuff. This can cause problems in itself. I would recommend taking it slooooooowly. Building up times, walking in straight lines on hard surfaces (roads), lots of corners or circles puts a strain on tendons, as does soft ground like we have at the moment, or school surfaces. I really can't stress enough how it is far better not to rush his recovery. There is every chance he may be able to jump again, but it's the recovery time he needs...

Good luck :)

ETA: My mare had a year out too.....

Depends on the tendon. Which one was it?

One of my horses had a tendon injury on his back leg but it wasn't too severe - the tendon in question was on the front of the leg, not the back so not too much pressure was exerted when jumping

the injury came from him taking off. He was going to run into a barbed wire fence so i had to turn him but there wasnt enough space and he nearly went into another fence. He then kinda fell over and i went flying. Then my darling boy desided to stand on me!

Thanks for the advice I knew about the walking in straight lines stuff from my vet and i seems to be working. Doen anyone Know the timescale before trotting and cantering??

I would ask your vet about all this. Give him a ring and have a chat, he should advise you best on all this :).

Hope your horse gets better soon!

He should be able to jump again as long as you slowly re adapt him to it. A horse at our barn had a sprained ankle, chipped bone, and some sort of tendon injury, and was good to go in 5 months. Just take it slow with him, and ask your vet about when you can do what, because he should know when your horse is physically ready to jump again.
