I fell off for the first time today:o I was surprised it didn't hurt?! I somersaulted over her head while cantering a bit tooooo fast. I got straight back on, slightly dizzy/embarrassed ahh.
I'd never ridden the horse before, she was FAST (I'm used to plods..) but as soon as I went over her head she stopped :) bless her.
I'm quite relieved I've had my first fall now, I have been riding a couple of years. It had to happen sometime.
Anyway....just to let anyone who is nervous about falling off, don't be...it's not always awful. If anything a bit embarrassing.

Well dont they say you have to fall off something like 8 times to become a 'good' rider ... so you only have another 7 to go !!! (not saying you're not a good rider now btw;) )
I've not officially fallen off as yet. I came off once jumping, she refused a jump, but I was already in forward seat so kinda cuddled her neck for a while, then realised I could get back on the saddle and jumped off and re-mounted.
Second time was when I bailed out galloping (see my thread on general board 'came off today - air lifted to hospital' ) That hurt but then I was going full pelt !!!
Its not the falling that hurts, its the landing !!!

Hi there, i had my first fall a couple of weeks ago, and as far as falls from a horse go it was miner...infact if i had of been paying attention it wouldn't of happened (thats the most embarrassing part) the horse spooked and took off i managed to stay on right up until i lost my stirrups then i just slid off the side and landed on my bum which didnt hurt that much...at first. needless to say the next couple of lessons were very short ones.
Anyways being my first fall shock set in...shaking, breathlessness, i even watched myself go completely blind 4 a couple of minutes which i was freaked out about (i had never heard of it happening before) until the instructor reassured me that it was only the shock..never want to go through that again, next time i know to stay on the ground and collect my thoughts for a bit instead of trying to stand up straight away

Hope your ok. My first fall was on my own horse and he were cantering in very tight circles as I was trying to get him to trot but he was in a bad mood and he lost his balance and slipped over onto his side and I came off his back on the ground (luckily he didin't fall on me) so it was actually his fall but I wasn't really scared just got on and told him we needed to work on his balance :p

Well, I've had 4 falls and I'm MORE nervous now than I was before I had them. Even a minor fall (one where you don't have to make a trip to the emergency room) can take a long time to fully recuperate from. My right leg still hurts sometimes even though I hurt it over a year ago.

Im happy you're ok! I had my first fall a few months ago with another inbetween :o They were both very minor. I was just nervous the next few times i got on a horse. But im good now ;) The first time i fell was because i wasnt paying atttention. Another horse entering the ring was spooked when the wind blew the gate into him. He tried to jump it or something and ending up breaking the gate in half along with a cut on his leg. Hes fine now though. It was a small cut--good thing. Well the loud noise of the breaking gate scared Lexington, the horse i was on. He didnt take off or anything just scooted over and back a bit from the trot which caught me off guard. (ive been riding since the summer - no where near an expert :) )My fall could have easily been avoided- a little embarrassing. More embarrassing then it hurt, like someone else had said. Sorry for the long message :D and its good that your ok!

I have come off three times now altogether - the first and third times were minor and I just got straight back on. The second though I ended up in agony for weeks had x-rays etc. It is definitely easier to get over the falls that don't need medical attention but I also think lingering affects from a bad fall such as a ache/pain in a leg is kind of a reminder when you mount again which gets the nerves going again. When I came off I landed on my right hip area and ever since my right leg hasn't felt the same as my left - its really weird and difficult to explain.
