HC stands for Hors-concours and it means that if your jumping a XC course then even if you get a good time etc it doesnt mean anything as it's like a dry run.
Kinda like a practice but in a competition setting. Rider not riding competitively.
Does that make sense to you???

Arrrhh, that would be why i couldn't work it out - (i failed french o'level twice) Does it stop you being eliminated after three refusals etc? Can you just keep having a go until you are round?

I have used it before. I'd booked both girls in for the baby jumping class (1ft rustic fences) as it was their first show. For a laugh, I tried them round the clear round beforehand. Sunny didn't make it round without refusals/stops but Mysti did on our fifth go. Now the clear round was 2ft6" when Mysti made it round (both could jump that high at home), and she'd sussed out this whole jumping round a course thing. We went to the 1ft class and I was happy to enter Sunny (who still hadn't worked out that you jumped the jumps in order, all of them!), but not Mysti as it wouldn't be fair on everyone else. I had paid though, and wanted to take her round for the experience, so I took her round H/C.
Sunny finally got the whole idea after the jump-off, silly creature, she needed a course of tinies to work it out as she'd done singles and xc at home, never courses!
