Dolly has been bare foot for about 3 yrs now and has lovely feet. However out on a hack on friday afternoon she picked up a stone that embeded itself into the white line spikey side down. I removed the stone or thought I had, with difficulty, but it left a hole. She didn't seem lame at the time. On Sat morning she was taken out for a walk in hand as she is stabled pretty much perminantly at the moment, and she seemed fine. Sat evening she was lame. I then managed to extract 2 very small and pointy stones from the hole, they were quite away in possibly about 5mm-1cm. I flushed the hole and put a cold poltice on to make sure there was nothing left in there. This morning she was sound again. I am stopping exersising her for a few days and will flush the hole twice a day. Sorry for the essay but I am worried that I may be missing something. Is there anything else I should be doing? Any advice would be welcome

Ouchie!! Poor girl :(

I think that I'd also do some infection prevention .... pioneer balm, propolis or something stuffed into the hole after you've flushed it. Not that I KNOW how to deal with it but that would be my instinct!

Pretty much just keep it clean, make sure you get everything out of there, and use something like borax to squirt in there or soak to make sure there's no infection. In situations where you can't avoid her walking over stones that could get in there you can plug it with something but best to leave air get in there the rest of the time since you don't want to risk infection being trapped in there.

Would be worth getting a trim or getting your farrier/trimmer to have a look to make sure this isn't due to flare stretching the white line which makes it easier for stones to get in there. The better thing that can cause this is as you grow out old flare the sole moves back into place before the wall does and leaves a space where stones can get trapped.

Thanks for all that, I have been plugging it when she goes out for a leg stretch and the farrier is coming on Monday :)
