So I've had an hour lesson this afternoon which was interesting to say the least. I had hoped to get a chance to work on my 2 point seat with a hope of getting to do some galloping on my next hack. However the horse I was riding this afternoon had a problem with halting. So this afternoon I had done plenty of transitions from walk to trot and trot to walk and halt. I also got to do some walk to canter and halt to canter which was fantastic although lovely horse wasn't impressed and insisted on bucking every time I asked for canter which at one time would have scared me to death but I actually enjoyed it. Only thing is now I suspect my fingers and shoulders will be aching tomorrow as the only way to halt him was to litterally pull on the reins until he stopped or walking him straight into the side of the school. I also had a problem with getting a 20m circle in canter. On the right rein it was much better as I could keep the canter going with my right leg but on the left my leg just dosen't work. I also think I've talked my 14 year old into a lesson so I'm really chuffed but I'll keep you posted on that one.

Sounds like you learnt lots today Loopy! Don't worry too much about the galloping, it will feel quite natural to lean forward a bit when you do it anyway. Just one tip though - ask the ride leader if the horse will stop suddenly at the end of the gallop. My OH's first gallop ended in an abrupt stop, as the horse knew exactly where to pull up, and unfortunately he didn't stop quite so fast and ended up in a pile on the ground infront of a horse that I could have sworn was giggling;)

Its funny but the thought of a sudden halt had crossed my mind. I'm going out on a hack next week so I'll let you know how I get on - hopfully there won't be any giggling horses for me:D How are you feeling about your dressage test now?

My legs freeze on the left rein in canter. I think it has something to do with my age and not being as supple as I used to be... Maybe ask your RI for exercises to help open up your hips. Then please let me know so I can practise as I am RI'less at present...Its good when you are buzzing from a lesson...:D
