I was born and raised cutting and herding cattle! If the horse had a lot of "cow" in him, cow sense if you will, be careful and watch the cattle. He is liable to go after a cow that turns in a direction you are least expecting, and then off you go in the oppisite direction! Keep a deep seat and your eyes on his head and maybe a hand on the horn! Wish I were riding with you! Happy Trails!

My QH mare was never trained to cut cattle but she does it instinctively. She cornered the neighbor's huge black angus bull and wouldn't let him move. Crazy horse. She "cuts" any coyotes and dogs that get in her pasture and will go after dogs while on trail rides if I give her the okay. We only do this to loose barking dogs that follow us yapping....you know the type! I do have to hang on to my "panic strap" because she is so quick!

I have been doing cutting...like umm 4 times already! People say I'm a "natural" cause I only took one lesson...then learned to trot and canter by myself:) so ya and I dont ride my own horse because he has no experience doing that..I ride a bigger horse (mines a pony) ahah
Good luck to everyone who cuts!

No offense, but it doesn't really take any skill to ride a cutter, except to stay on. :D Those horses do everything by themselves. I rode a few cutters, back when I was younger, :p and all you have to do is sit there and hold on. The horses take care of the rest.

I've never been cutting but I've been team penning many times which is similar. You still have to cut a cow and put it into the penn. Team penning hear is fun for all breeds and types of riding. We got the die hard cutters there, the hunter/jumpers in there english tack on their Warmbloods, little kids on their ponies that are smaller then the cows, and the plain backyard horseman. A lot of people even pony their yearlings into the cows to get them used to it. Team penning is great fun! If you ever get a chance to do it take it!
