Hi

Could someone kindly remind me of the correct aids for rising trot to canter, in the school.

I think-:
approaching the corner,
half halt,
sit,
inside leg on the girth, outside leg a little behind (or is it the other way around?),
lift inside hand slightly,
nudge with inside leg.

And are you supposed to get all that in place during one stride?!
I ride a big fit 17.3 horse so I should have more time during a stride than most but my brain is slow.

He is capable of a turbo-powered canter if surprised, the half halt seems to get his attention.

But I don't always get a canter, just a fast trot.

Advice please.

many thanks

i'd add:
-start sitting trot a bit before the corner, so you're in balance and not bouncing - i bet he has a big trot!
-ride a 10m circle in the corner to get his attention and get the correct bend
-use your voice
-use both legs, not just the inside. the ouitside leg further back asks him to strike off with the outside hind.
-make sure you aren't tipping forward as you ask - if you do, you often lose the contact on the reins and lose the impulsion
-keep the trot as slow as possible, as if his legs are moving fast in the two-time trot rhythm, he'll find it harder to change leg sequence
-a tap with the crop sometimes does the trick as well, especially if you're doing the right things and he doesn't fancy playing!

A useful bit of advice I was given which helped me was to take up a contact on the outside rein and tuck your seat under as you give the leg aids. I presume this helps balance the horse.
