The one I've had best results with is the Feel Good 30 Science Formula Calmer, It definately stops him overreacting so badly & reduces his overly strong flight instinct :)

Others I've tried are NAF Magic (didn't like the taste & he started getting edgy after a week or so on it), Top Spec calmer (can't say how effective it was as nothing persuaded him to eat it  ) & plain CalMag (helped a bit but not as effective). I also know people who swear by Nupafeed but nowadays I'm too wary of coming off the FG30 to try it!

Cal Mag or MagOx. Cheaper than tack shop supplements and just as effective. They don't sedate the horse but stop the horse from overreacting to normal stimulii.

Where can you get cal mag from? If its an agricultural shop is it called cal mag or is it under a diff name, and how much would you feed per day to start with?

I've heard good things about nupafeed - but don't have any experiance of calmers myself. The person who uses it swears by it though. It is basically just magnesium.

never ever use global herbs. they are not trustworthy. normally in a shop if a supplement goes out of date the manufacturer will/has to replace it, GH simply send out new stickers!!
Since i worked in a shop, and am a feed advisor(teehee)
*NAF magic can be ok... but not the best.
*FG30 is a very good brand and good for the more competition orriented horse.
*A good blend is Top Spec cool condition cubes with the balancer which seems to keep them level.
*NAF Tempralalax is more for shows and traveling etc but works..
*NAF Oestress is good for an edgy mare..
*Hilton Herbals is coming out with new supps..
Let me no if u need more advice.. .xxx

Glad you posted this :D My boy Bo is as edgy as they come and the calmer I used last year doesn't seem to be working so well now :(
I have tried loads of calmers with him, magnesium based seem to do nothing for him, Top Spec didn't work at all, steady up did very little for him.... you get the idea though  anyway I think I might give the FG30 a try, so many people have had good results with it :p

I've used NAF Magic in the past and found it brilliant. It doesn't change the personality at all but it does take the edge off their adrenaline. :)

I brought the FG30 at lunchtime, and just got a phone call from the yard to say my horse has been causing a riot today, charging round like a maniac winding all the other horses up and rearing when he was brought in  bad boy - so I will let you know how we get on with it :p

Been following this link with interest. does anyone have anymore info on the Mag Ox or Cal Mag ( not heard of them before). Where would you buy them and what amounts would need to be fed ?

Well just thought I would update - Bo has been on the FG30 science formula for almost 2 weeks and so far it seems to have had no effect what so ever :( but it does say it can take 1-2 months to work so I will continue to feed it until the tub runs out, but I think this confirms my thoughts that magnesium is not something he needs supplementing (he gets Farriers Formula so that probably gives pleanty of it).

I think I am going to try Valarien next - anyone use the cordual that robinsons stock?

I rate global herbs as ive head many good things. BUT as skye said, they are not trust worthy. And tbh many products DONT have dates on.

Ive asked personally, and through the shop i work in, what is in the sarc x cream, other customers have asked about other stuff, and they just come out with natural herbs bla bla bla. I asked one person, who wasnt really working properly for them but a rep was ill and so he was doing her rounds, i asked him and he sheepishly said 'im not sure, but i know you wouldnt want to know'

Just a warning :)....although it DOES work. :)

For instant calming effect I reckon that the Global Herbs instant calming sachets really work, I popped one in Storm and Joe's morning feed the day we trailered them home and they were calmer than normal - in fact, Storm looked positively donkey like!!!! For long term use I'm trying Settleze - don't know if its actually working or if its the turn out thats helping Storm - mind you, she's still gurning at me and kicking her stable door..............!!

CalMag is available from agricultural merchants (it's used in cows for Staggers) or MagOx is available from Jackie Taylor who goes on EE & IDGH and the Metabolic Horse Yahoo group.

Jessey, have you tried the NAF Magic? When I used it, it really did make a difference.
I haven't but have tried 3 different magnesium based supplements now (which Magic is) and none have helped - magnesium only calms a horse if they are deficent in it in the first place.

I tried Global Herbs superCalm recently, used the whole tub, and can't say I noticed any difference at all:confused: . So I havn't bought anymore.

I think I may give Cal Mag a go.

My horse is rising 4. He's normally fine, but every now and then  . One day last week, I tied him up, undid half his rug, and he suddenly became a mad bucking bronco, snapping the string he was tied to, landing me on my bum, and he did the off:eek: . Luckily he couldn't get very far.
At the end of the day though, he is a youngster, and he's only out for about 6 hours a day at the moment, so I think its not surprising really what a live wire he is.
Roll on the summer, when he'll be out 24/7, fat and tired!!:p

Also the spring grass is starting to come through...

I'll let you know if I have any results with Cal Mag:)

Hi everyone just an update ive been using the feel good 30 calmer since i posted this threat so bout a month ago and she is calmer,i know this product can take a while to kick in but ive just started noticing the diff now.
What ive noticed is that diff products work for diff horses so its a case of trail and error but its seems to be working so far.:D
Thanks for all the advice i didnt know there were so many claming products out there.
