View Full Version : Using Magnesium as a Calmer?

Has anyone done it and was it successful?

I've read many articles through the years that attest hypersensitivity/irritability can be caused by magnesium deficiencies. So Im just checking to see if there are any real life stories about how it has helped other peoples horses.

Im considering this product: Su-Per Mag Calm http://www.orchardequestrian.com/cart.php?target=product&product_id=4162&category_id=7

Yes, I use CalMag though MagOx is probably better (Saff eats CalMag happily and it's cheap!). A lot of barefooters use it and have seen positive results behaviourally.

As I've said on another thread on here .... somewhere ... it's not a sedative but it stops them from overreacting to normal stimulii. It will only work if they're magnesium deficient. You're not going to change the basic character of the horse and make a fireball into a dope but it does take the edge off the behaviour if they're lacking in Mg.

Yup, feed Bry mag oxide and when I run out I notice a difference in the old troll.

How much do you feed per day, is that in one feed or split ?

yes, it is widely used over here. of course it only works if your horse has a magnesium deficiency, and many daft horses don't. so it won;t work on all cases. worth a try though.

Now that you mention it, both my ponies when they came were very hiper and they now have a salt block with magnesium in it... and they are less hiper...

Definitely helps with Rio's behaviour, she used to become uncharacteristically hot and spooky during grass growth spurts but pretty much remains her level headed self on calmag.

I've been using Global Herbs Supercalm, and I really don't think its made any difference at all:confused:

Where do you lot get Calmag from? Can you buy it over the internet? How much is it, and how long does it last?

Thanks, Sheryl

YOu can get MagOx at any feedstore - it's just magnesium oxide, commonly used as a cattle supplement.

Thanks for that. I'll see if my feed place has it, next time I go;)

I like Topspec Calmer with mag for my Welsh Ferrari, it really helps him take life less seriously.

I too feed MagOx - mainly for feet (my mare is barefoot). Certainly helps to keep her on an even keel.

I am intrigued by your comment about basil, Skye94, please tell us more :)

I have tried a couple of different varieties with Bo, they didn't work, the Tryp doesn't seem to be working now either, so just tried FG30 science formula supplement (which is mag and B vits), he has been on it about 3 weeks and definatly no calming effect!

It didn't work for mine she was just highly strung, nervous and excitable which resulted in continual spooking and bolting, what really worked though was vitamin E and Selenium, after 7 years of trying everything she's now a different horse :)

Thats very interesting PR, I might go that route after I finish this pot of stuff, can't hurt to try it right. How long did it take for you to notice a difference on that?

4 - 5 days  it was very noticeable after about 2 weeks though :D She must have had a hormone inbalance as its usually fed to brood mares, its worked really well on my gelding too :D

Its definately worth a try and even better its only about a tenner for a big tub :D:D I use the NAF one :)

thats magnesium based again, It didn't work for me but like someone said earlier it would only work if they were suffering a magnesium deficiency. Its finding out what they're deficient in or the reason behind the behaviour thats the problem, finding the right sort of calmer is a sodding nightmare :D
