Bruno had quite a short thin mane and forelock when i got him it is now a better length and thickness,i put his driving bridle on today but his forelock has no where to go except sticking out through the little gaps!what are you supposed to do with it?
his bridle is leather and has an attatchement that goes from the top of the headpiece and down his face the browband slots through it so there is really only room for his ears!:o

I divide it and have half each side of the winker stays. Unless it is a hairy horse when I plait it and tie it back, so they can see!

If you have a hairy small pony keeping the bridle on it can be a problem so people plait it and include a piece from the neck side of the main, so the bridle is held in place.

I have seen people who pusth it right back so the horse can see.

thanks i did part it and have 2 pigtail things but he looked like a punk gone wrong, it didnt look very comfortable either. i think plaiting it next time may be better,i dont think he would be amused. i think he has been hogged in the past which probably helped it fit better

With the Shetlands my blinker stays are quite long and so I pass the forelock through the triangle formed by them and the browband, looks neat but only possible if you have long enough stays to not interfer with the fit of the blinkers.

hi - i have a horse with a bushy forelock, does anyone know how to do a french plait? i would love to know how you do it? I normally do a normal plait then tie it back in the bridle but fancy something different. i saw a thread a while ago where something did amazing french plaits up the mane.

I have a shire X with a massive forelock but not as big as the cute little guy with the big hair do! AWWW. but I french plait his forelock from the poll. I will try and talk you through it.

Start by spliting the mane and the forelock. Coatgloss at the ready its usually knotty.
then get two small pieces from the outside edge
cross them over like your gunna plait, take another but only from the out side edge leave the centre to just fall flat down the centre under/inbetween the plait. then do the plait thing, with your free hand gather another outside section (very small if not the end looks like a golf ball) add this to the section thats on the top for the next move, plait this in, then the next hand thats free gather and add to the next section thats on the top to move so on and so forth so that theres no more to gather from the sides the plait should be them more or less together. sort it at this point so that it is a recognisable plait. tuck the end under in the gap thats between the hair you've gathered. fold it into 2 then put a band on. the driving bridle should fit on if the forelock is really thick. then it may need to be off-set a little so that the bridle will stay snug. It's just like plaiting a tail up really but much easier.

I hope this made sence. If not take a trip to your hairdressers explain, and beg them to show you.

There's a barber in Lerwick who used to be a jockey, he might be able to help! ;) ;)

For messing about I use rubber bands so poor Jackson can see where he's going.

There is a welfare issue being brought to the fore with the BDS, ATM about M&Ms who have so much forelock that they cannot see forward, IN driving trials it is not fair for the horse to have his vision limited to such an extent, that he can only see the ground.

Proposals seem to be going to be voiced that M&M types need to have the forelock secured somehow to allow forward vision in HDT, but with Private driving and dressage is it not so crucial.

I tend to come down to the view that if they can see where they are going if, poo happens they are more likely to keep themselves safe, rather than thunder on and run into more trouble.

Maggie has these issues. She has tons of forelock.
What I do to keep the bridle on..is cut a bridle path just a smidge bigger than her bridle. If I did not do that,,would have bridle issues.
I braid up her forelock and tuck it under her nose band.

This is what she looks like if I do not have her forelock braided.
