My pony Jessy is a Welsh X. What kind of "haircut" would be traditional for horses like that? Here in Austria we don't have many cobs. So far I have gone with the "rule" for Haflinger hairstyles and kept her mane as natural as possible, with only a little trimming to keep it even. In Haffi manes the individual hairs are wavy and thicker than Jessys and her mane is beginning to look a bit untidy. Would it be acceptable to pull her mane?

My Kazz is a small gypsy cob and has a long mane but it does get scruffy so I do pull the really untidy hairs but not so you would even notice it has been pulled. Cobs often have their manes hogged which complements nice big necks!:)

Sorry to say and i know many hate the look but there are a good few cobs at my yard and they have hogged mains! shave it right off, it actually lookes pretty fab when tidied up as they are usually failry chunky and have chunky necks!
Just whatever you prefer though obviously :)

I would leave it wild :D and just pull the long un-ruley bits to keep it looking tidy :p but you could happily pull it or hog it if you wanted :p just do what suits her

Thanks for your advice! I don't think a hogged mane would suit Jessy - her neck is not her best feature. Maybe I'll just shorten it a bit to make it easier to keep it tidy.

I'm a natural mane fan although I admit that when my friend bought home her new cob his hogged mane really showed off his beautiful musculature.
Now it's fly season I feel really sorry for him. No mane and a cut short tail
Not only do manes and tails look better in my oppinion but they also serve a purpose.
I'm looking forward to the punky hair styles he'll sport as it all starts to grow out :p

My cob is hogged. He looks fab, in my opinion.

I wouldn't hog a welshie though cos they're a native breed. Wouldn't hog a traditional coloured cob either. Would only hog a show cob type. I would leave your horse's mane long.

hiya. My cob mare has a very thick mane, and I like the longer look. But it was making her neck very sweaty in hot weather, so it was thinned out and pulled a little to make it lighter and a bit neater.
Take it too short and it sticks up if the hair is native-y, so do it in little stages. Tidy it a bit, then leave it a couple of days to settle, then do some more if you need to.
It's easy to go too far in one go!
