My mare is bay with a really thick black mane, I was thinking of thinning it...

I've never done it before, although I was thinking of making a couple thick pony tails along the top part of the mane, then the rest of the hair underneith cut it really short...

Has anyone cut a mane like this? Did it turn out, or did it look like a butcher job!!! :D

I thought I'd ask before making a mess!!! :D ;)

I wouldnt use scissors. I would invest in a solocomb or a pulling comb and pull the mane :)

Clipper Sharp sell a really good grooming tool that's very useful for thinning manes and giving tails a pulled appearance without you actually having to pull. They're easier to use than Solo Combs but it's still a skill that you need to develop.

I thin my mares super thick mane with thinning scissors, mainly because I don't have the time or inclination to pull it as it'd take forever. It gives a nice look for every day but I'm going to invest in a thinning blade if/when I decide to show as it gives a better look for plaiting.

Yep the clipper sharp tools are good, takes some practice though and you must do it slowly or like me, you could muck it up! It 'pulls' tails well too, if need be.

I have to contend with a massive mane...

i wouldn't cut it - it'll all grow out at once. i tend to leave them strictly alone for a coupel of weeks and thren brush vigorously using a plastic curry comb- loads comes out.
